In the six short months since Citrix CloudStack contributed to the Apache Foundation, the decision was a huge success in both open source and commercial terms. A thriving open source community growing and has already led CloudStack through a complete cycle of products, leading to the imminent release of Apache CloudStack 4.0, the incubation output currently in the Apache Software Foundation. CloudStack also won support from leading vendors such as Cisco, NetApp and CA, which have all announced major investments in the platform this week at Citrix Synergy in Barcelona.
More importantly, CloudStack continues to gain rapid adoption with large scale deployments worldwide, both with key customers service providers and enterprises. While you might not realize it from reading the press releases, is by far the CloudStack open platform the most widely deployed source in the cloud. It is not even a close race. While other platforms have a lot of "public relations victories," very few have actual deployments.
CloudStack, however, has 100s of successful clouds in full production of some of the biggest brands in the world. Not all small clouds either. CloudStack customers already generate more than $ 1 billion in revenue from their cloud computing services, and the largest shopping cloud has more than 30,000 physical servers in production. It does not take a genius to use our Community product or as many of our Open Source users have deployed over 1,000 physical servers in their cloud, with more being added all the time. the largest telecommunications companies in the world - BT China Telecom - are also betting big on CloudStack, building their next generation platforms CloudStack and CloudPlatform. And while it might not be generating all the titles, that's ok because we believe that in the world of clouds, "POs PR asset" every time.
With hundreds contributing developers, and thousands community members, CloudStack also quickly become one of the fastest growing open source community projects of all kinds on the market. It is also really independent. Less than a third of the contributors are affiliated with Citrix product, and we do not have a majority stake in the Apache PMC (Project Management Committee) for CloudStack
By allowing developers to act as the individual conductors of the value and innovation rather than as agents for companies with interests, the Apache model maintained a laser focus on building a community that provides software focused on user needs .
Furthermore, companies know that the health of CloudStack is in the hands of a larger community that is larger than Citrix. They have the opportunity to be directly involved in the Apache CloudStack community, where membership of the company is unimportant.
widespread adoption In response, CloudStack won.
- CloudStack currently adds more 500 new clouds a month , including customers well beyond the market for service providers where CloudStack has gained traction. The solution became a standard platform in academia, the launch of large clouds of the community and to increase technical computing efforts. A member of the community reported that some implementations even played a key role in the recent discovery of the Higgs boson, the so-called "God particle" - in their interaction with CERN. We all thought it was pretty cool.
- We also saw CloudStack enter the market consumer applications -from fresh platforms of social games to navigation services. We also CloudStack work to help provide a popular service cloud music used by most of the people reading this post.
- CloudPlatform, the Citrix product based on CloudStack, now feeds the public, private or hybrid cloud strategies over 130 organizations worldwide. Many of the world's largest telecommunications companies have chosen CloudPlatform as the basis for their next generation of cloud computing offerings including BT, China Telecom, EVRY, IDCFrontier, KDDI, KT, NTT Communications, Orange MBS and Slovak Telecom. Even the green world of the cloud is powered by CloudStack, overwriting the IT transformation with the spirit of saving the planet one application at a time.
As CloudStack and CloudPlatform reach the mainstream commercial success, they have also attracted the support of the leaders in the technology industry to expand and improve the technology - even without giving them a seat social at the table (which is the way of true open source communities should work)
- Cisco joined Citrix in a new strategic partnership to build an integrated cloud orchestration solution based Citrix CloudPlatform. This new solution will integrate with CloudPlatform switches Cisco Nexus, Cisco Open Network Environment (ONE) and the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS). Cisco will also create models validated for CloudPlatform and CloudStack to provide enterprises and service providers with a proven platform for the construction, management and deployment of Amazon-style clouds. They also support the CloudStack project with engineers who work in the community by helping to meet the Quantum project CloudStack and network components.
- CA will participate and support both CloudStack and CloudPlatform with its broad portfolio of cloud business management solutions, including CA Cloud Automation Suite and CA Nimsoft Monitor. This helps to bring cloud in traditional enterprise data center. Like Cisco, CA also participates directly in the CloudStack community.
- NetApp continues to work with Citrix CloudStack and CloudPlatform to integrate and simplify the storage cloud business, taking advantage of their unified storage architecture capabilities in CloudStack . VCE and Vblocks careful as we have already deployed a number of converging infrastructure clouds here, including those KIVBF and the University of Sao Paulo.
- Alcatel-Lucent based its CloudBand carrier cloud solution on CloudStack as a management layer, driving key integrations with OpenStack, NetApp and HP. An interesting approach on this front is the support for the OpenStack API, interoperability of conduct between two clouds of open source projects
- Many other key suppliers ecosystem recently pledged to embrace and develop solutions around CloudStack, including Basho, BigSwitch, Inktank / Ceph, Nicira, Midokura and SolidFire, bringing even more value to the ecosystem in the hot zones of storage software and software network defined.
You can see a number of great partner videos here, including Cisco reference models, RightScale, enStratus, UShareSoft, Zenoss and many others.
many industry observers were surprised when we contributed CloudStack to the Apache Foundation. After all, Citrix had to pay a large sum of money for Cloud.com-and now we were contributing to copyright, code and control to the open source community, as CloudStack has increased its momentum and bring more revenue for Citrix.
We made the move based on a simple but powerful belief that "open" wins in the cloud era, and by contributing CloudStack to the home of the most successful open source projects in the world, we would all gain much more-Citrix, the open source community and the clients we serve. That's exactly what happened, and we could not be more excited by it.
For the great Apache community, thank you for the opportunity and to help us achieve this. We could not have done it without the contributors who joined the CloudStack effort and we are delighted to continue working with you to complete the release 4.0.0-incubating and work at his studies as an Apache top level project.
