COPPA Rule Update

The Children Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is said to give parents control over what information websites can collect from their children. COPPA Rule, which became effective Monday was updated to keep pace with booming personal information - a large part from the increased use of mobile devices and social networks, such as cookies which track the activity of a child online, geolocation information, photos, videos for children., and audio recordings

a goal is to limit advertising to children and to help parents control the personal information of their children - especially those under 13 years. But the new rule leaves application developers scratching their heads about how they are supposed to avoid collecting personal information from children.

For example, how will the website owners know exactly who is on their website? A parent could call their computer or mobile device to their child at any time, the developer has no way to determine when this happened.

The FTC seeks to help developers implement the new rule, and to help parents to understand. The hope is to reduce the amount of targeted advertising parents to push. But if history is any indication, it will be a difficult battle

Learn why confidentiality is the word of the year ...

from PRISM and Edward Snowden scandal arrival of Google Glass, 2013 was the year that the desire to be seen and heard has been turned on its head. Consider the following: In January, the TSA junked body scanners in airports that produce virtually nude pictures of travelers; In June, Edward Snowden revealed widespread world-spying program PRISM Project; In October, Google announced a new privacy policy plans that allow the company to integrate data users in advertisements. The discussion of privacy - what it is and what it is not - embodies the preeminent concern of 2013. For this reason, the privacy Dictionary.com's Word of the Year

life is defined as. "the state of being free from intrusion or interference in life and private affairs of one." distinguish private and public predates the English language. In ancient Rome, privatus and publicus were juxtaposed words that distinguish what belongs to the state ( publicus ) from what belongs to individual ( privatus )

now, there are more variables in the equation :. user data collection companies and millions of people with recording devices. Many of us have adopted social media, choosing to volunteer intimate details and personal photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram; this robust participation echoes a point made by Mark Zuckerberg in 2010 that the level of public comfort with sharing personal information online is a "social norm" that has "evolved over time." Although a recent survey conducted by Harris poll shows that young people are now monitor and modify their privacy settings more than ever, a development that USA Today nicknamed "the effect Edward Snowden." in his eloquent and extensive history of the right to privacy The New Yorker , Jill Lepore summarized these seemingly at-odds pulses surrounding privacy as "the paradox of American culture obsessed, both , to being seen and to be hidden, a world where the only thing more expensive than privacy is advertising. "

globally, beginning December saw the release of an open letter signed by more than 500 world-renowned writers, urging the United Nations to create an international charter on digital rights. They stressed the right of the individual "to remain unobserved and peace" in "thoughts, personal environments and communications. " One of the signatories, Jeannette Winterson, says: "Privacy is an illusion. Do you mind about that? I "But the conversation is not limited to the level of the individual. The same companies that the public feels a growing mistrust to face their own battles for privacy to the next level. Also in December, Apple, Google, Facebook, AOL, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter and Yahoo! have signed a petition imploring the federal government to impose the limits on the power of government to collect user data. As Shel Israel dwelt in Forbes , in this digital age 'confidence will become the new currency, "and companies are very aware of this.

As the discussion unfolds, we scrutinize what privacy means today, and in doing we wonder if the definition of privacy need another article intrusion what do we want to be free? the government? the foreign governments "?" Corporations? other people? "All of the above? The answer is the missing piece of the puzzle that we decide together that the floating definition of solidification of privacy.

Why was IPVanish Insensitive heartbleed -

After a review of the vulnerability heartbleed OpenSSL, we determined that our implementation of SSL was never vulnerable. From the beginning, we used OpenSSL versions that were not affected (OpenSSL versions 1.0.0j, 1.0.0e and 0.9.8). We have not supported the extension TLS 15, the Heartbeat extension vulnerable to attack, and we invite you to use public tools such as http://possible.lv/tools/hb/ or http: // filippo.io/Heartbleed / to test one of our servers to check.

Although never vulnerable, we found that our Web site supports an older version of SSL, SSL V2, we are disabling precaution. In addition, while our servers and software never used the TLS extension 15, we are working to update to the latest version of OpenVPN patch for additional peace of mind.

In summary, at no time data IPVanish compromised as a result of heartbleed. Because of the scope of this feat IPVanish if your password is shared with another service, which is not recommended, we suggest that you update immediately.

Please see http://heartbleed.com/ for more information about this exploit and check back on this blog for more information.

future of online privacy Decided by the judges n ' use Email

Nearly half of the Supreme Court of the United States was born during the Great depression of the 1930s Four other justices are in their 60s, and the youngest is 54. most these judges had already lived half or more of their life when the Internet came into American life, putting them behind modern communications emails, texting and social media.

people who decide the fate of online privacy in the current legal cases and future have little or no personal point of reference when it comes to understanding how e-mail and other electronic communications have shaped the lives of Americans.

Justice Elena Kagan, "kid" of the court to 54, which uses the personal email and surfing the web, admitted that his colleagues "are not necessarily those most technologically sophisticated. "

When the judges want to communicate with another to the Supreme Court, they do not use email. Instead, the memos are paper reminiscent of parchment 19th wrote on hand-century and are delivered by room aid .

Some judges, including Chief Justice John Roberts, are clueless about the legitimate and legal reasons why the Americans would carry two cell phones.

In a recent case, Roberts "insinuated that the police could reasonably suspect that a person carries two cell phones to be a drug dealer. Is he not aware that much of the political class DC with which it associates - including many of its clergy - covers both personal and business phone every day, "columnist Trevor Timm wrote to the Guardian [

other members of the court have revealed their ignorance line referring to "Netflick" in a case of copyright online

"therefore, the future of our intimacy, our technology -.. these problems landed at the feet of a handful of tech-unsavvy judges future judicial candidates should be asked about their knowledge of technology during confirmation hearings and while many have made the argument. that the FISA [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] secret court should employ a technologist to explain the technical problems to the less technical judges, the same can be said of the Supreme Court. China block Google services -
IPV_WhichVPN_blog THIS ONE

Google is the latest victim of the vast online censorship in China, according to reports on the country.

Since last week, regulators based in China have blocked several Google services, including Search, Gmail and other services , a report on the country. The country has not confirmed that it has blocked Google services, but most Chinese users found Google's services to be inaccessible since last week.

It is believed that the blockade is related to the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 week in which Chinese killed, injured and arrested mass numbers of unarmed demonstrators. Each year, the Chinese government censors the Web to try to limit the protests against the thwarted uprising. Many Internet services are currently blocked or censored, including social networks and other web communication tools.

Google has had a contentious relationship with China over the years. The company had already offered its search services in China. But after facing the government down over censorship, Google has decided to move its services to Hong Kong. The move effectively allowed the search company to operate outside the rules and regulations imposed by the Chinese government. While China showed this week, however, he still has the ability to block the flow of traffic from Hong Kong in the mainland.

One of Google services owned not affected in this latest bout of censorship is YouTube. The video site has been blocked in China for years, as well as Facebook and Twitter

Is your business a Tracker Privacy Nightmare? -

Earlier this week, Sen. Charles Schumer (DN.Y.) has made some headlines by calling FitBit and other activity trackers as " nightmare of privacy "for the collection of user data" can potentially be sold to third parties, such as employers, insurance providers and other enterprises, without the knowledge or consent of users. "

FitBit perhaps not the ideal society to isolate, but Schumer correctly stated that there is currently "no federal laws that prevent developers to share personal health information with third parties." He said the FDA issued health information privacy guidelines on medical applications, but he said that fitness applications do not fall under the protections of privacy.

Although it appears that the law did not follow the new technologies on privacy protection and consumer safety, you can take some steps to protect yourself.

  • Consult privacy policy, in particular as regards the sale or sharing of your data, the manufacturer of any equipment you use to transmit or store personal information. (Googling the company name and the term "policy confidentiality "generally works well.)
  • Learn how your data is well protected while being transmitted or stored. Is it stored locally on your device or in the cloud? Is it encrypted for transmission?
  • Never use untrusted networks (such as Wi-Fi) to send personal information any type of device you are using.

Before throwing your cell phone in your bag and hop on the plan or car rental season, you must secure and protect all about it. In the third part of IPVanish Smart Shopping Series, we share five tips to help you travel smarter, not harder during holidays

  1. Important telephone numbers Store. you never know when you'll need to contact your hotel or airline to save time and avoid stress by watching numbers you might need in advance. significant contact information stored in the address book of your phone is as good as having your itinerary on speed dial.
  2. Take care of your finances before you travel. There is a good chance that you won 't always have a secure connection when you are away, so you should not provide more sensitive personal information than necessary. Avoid having to use banking applications or provide your credit card number by planning your bill payments and make deposits or mobile purchases before leaving.
  3. Set a password. If someone other than yourself ends with your phone, a password is the first line of defense for your personal data. To keep your private information, create a password for your phone and set your screen to lock automatically within five minutes.
  4. Back up everything. Hopefully nothing bad will happen to your phone while you are on your trip (touch wood!), But it's not a bad idea to save a copy of anything you like. Use a service like Lookout to ensure that your photos and your contacts will be safe no matter what your phone goes through.
  5. Check your operator's roaming policy. The last thing you want to come home to is a six-digit phone bill, so make sure you are familiar with the policy of your carrier about how to use your phone or in international areas homelessness. Know when you need to rely on a Wi-Fi over your data connection can help you plan how you use your phone on your trip.

Why Phishing is killing you

Why Phishing is killing you -
Why Phishing is Killing You

So maybe the title is a bit inflated: phishing scams are not in Indeed, a major cause of death. But what they are is a major cause of identity theft, and sometimes it can feel like the same thing.

How many foreigners face without you voluntarily gave your social security number to lately? We guess your answer is a big fat zero. Who would do that? Better yet, ask such a ridiculous question? What you might not realize how easy it is to be deceived into giving sensitive information to someone with less honorable intentions through the Internet. Phishing attacks are used to deceive the innocent people and well meaning into revealing personal information, passwords and bank account information so they can be viewed without the consent or knowledge of the account holder. This insidious form of cybercrime is one of the most common types of identity theft on the Internet today.

How same-phishing is accomplished? What tactics are used in order to mislead the unsuspecting Internet users in the fall for them?

Phishing attacks usually take the form of an e-mail that establishes a kind of alarm bells off in your head trying your basic instincts. This may be something you offer some sort of price that is too good to be true in an urgent letter from a financial agency. The subject will usually alert you to a kind of urgent offer to entice you to click on it. Once you open the email, it will most likely take you through a set of instructions for claiming a prize or remedy a problem. These instructions are usually where the attacker will ask you to enter your password or other identifying information they will use to compromise your account.
One of worse things you can do if you receive a phishing email is to click on all the links it contains. These links often lead to a fake website that is designed to get you to capture important details or account information. They may also contain viruses or other harmful files that can infect your computer if downloaded

Phishing Email Example Source :. DAS Computer Consultants

Sometimes these fraudulent emails look like the real deal: tricksters will use official-looking logos and some basic personal information about you in order to convince you that they are worth the trust. If this is the case, how can you know if the email was sent to you real? We recommend heading straight to the company's Web site by typing the URL in the browser navigation bar. From there, you can call or email the company directly to see if they really sent you the email in question.

Of course, the best way to act in such a situation is to take a minute to think about why the email was sent to you in the first place. Do you have reason to believe that your bank requires your urgent action to save your account be closed? Is it really likely that knowledge long lost yours demand large sums of money to help return home from an exotic location? If you have suspicions about why the email was sent in the first place, it is best to protect your privacy and online security by following with caution and go with your gut.

At this point, you might be planning to sell your computer and never venture onto the Internet again, and we here at IPVanish do not blame you! But take a deep breath and keep reading -reclaiming your safety on the Internet is easier than you might think. Here are some key steps to protect yourself online:

stick to navigation only secure sites

For top-notch Internet security and identity protection against flight, try to visit sites use https instead of http in the URL. This additional layer of protection secures your connection to the web site and makes you invulnerable to listen online attacks and man-in-the-middle.

Keep your accounts on lockdown with passwords

Your first line of defense against any kind of cyber attack is a strong password. Using a password that does not contain the names or words that can be found in a dictionary is crucial to deter pirates attempting to access your accounts. Each password that you use across the Internet must be unique, at least 12 characters, should include a variety of upper and lower case letters as well as numbers and special characters if allowed. Above all, make sure you keep your passwords. Sharing your passwords over insecure channels (such as social media) will make you an easy target for cybercrime.

Build a strong defense for your computer with anti-malware software

using a firewall and keep your anti-malware and antivirus software can mean the difference between online security and a big headache. Make sure to perform regular scans of your computer to avoid becoming a victim.

fly under the radar with a virtual private network

The use of a virtual private network (VPN) will always be your best bet for protection against all forms of cyber crime and piracy. VPNs encrypt your Internet traffic and make you invisible to prying eyes. 2015: A Year in Review

2015 was a difficult year for security and privacy. It seemed that every few days, we were hit with another story about a data breach, a vulnerability in the operating system, or a proposal 1984 esque legislation. The numbers were staggering. At December 22, there were 766 data breaches this year in the US alone. That breaks down to more than 2 violations per day, with 177 840 420 records exposed.

At the heart of this business is trust. Time and again our faith was betrayed that authorities we our personal data, devices, and privacy have let us down. And this disappointment was widespread, covering health care providers, higher education institutions, and government agencies. Although we reserve the right to remain skeptical, here's hoping that 2016 will be a leap forward for security and privacy. Until then, here's one last look at some of the most controversial moments of security and confidentiality of 2015.
