Citrix XenServer Tech Preview: Citrix provides continued commitment to the future of XenServer -

Since we announced the "full" open sourcing XenServer back in 2013, there were many questions and concerns whether or not was Citrix continues to invest in Citrix XenServer committed. Some even hinted that somehow Citrix XenServer had set chosen as commercially supported product and technology.

nothing could be farther from the truth.

Citrix XenServer is alive and well! It supplies about 40% of the Citrix XenDesktop implementations, and 60% of the Citrix Cloud Platform-based production private and public IaaS cloud infrastructure environments. It continues as the underlying server virtualization platform for some of the largest private and public institutions around the world to power enterprise data center modernization projects.

When I discussed at this year's Citrix annual user conference, Synergy 2014, Citrix has, and will continue in the robust future roadmap of Citrix XenServer.

On July 8, 2014, we have the latest technology to invest in existing Citrix XenServer customers with active Subscription Advantage preview next release of Citrix XenServer codenamed Project Creedence

Here is a brief summary of latest features in Citrix XenServer Tech Preview contained .:

power

While earlier versions concentrated on the scale, this Tech Preview adds to deliver this through significant performance improvements in networking and storage. This includes an in-memory read cache, support for Tapdisk3, General Receive Offload (GRO) and the reintroduction of Workload Balancing (WLB).

scalability

The new 64-bit Linux control domain (dom0) removed a number of bottlenecks that were dom0 32-bit Linux available with, and gives us the opportunity to integrate newer devices, with less kernel memory limitations on the number of devices in a system. An immediate advantage of a 64-bit Dom0 is that we can use 64-bit compiler settings to take advantage of modern processor extensions, while a 64-bit Dom0 previous restrictions eliminated vgpu scalability.

Supportability

Significant numbers of new guests support and hardware compatibility dramatically expanded

vgpu

Improved scalability of vgpu -. yet the only true solution vgpu the world for graphics-intensive workloads for virtualized environments and optimized for XenDesktop. Now scales to 96 VMs compared to 64 VMs on Citrix XenServer 6.2.0 SP1.

DVSC

override to the previous deprecation notice for the Distributed Virtual Switch Controller (DVSC).

TCO reduction

read cache, TRIM and UNMAP support for VDI space reclamation.

The second most desired improvement is the ability to search the entire Citrix websites like blogs and Knowledge Center articles, so that users can get all the information they need in one place.

Regarding the content eDocs, best practices are the most requested, followed by Example installations, architecture diagrams, examples of specific configurations and explanations of how product features function.

the type of content of the utmost importance for our readers text-based content, followed by graphics (Deployment and architecture plans, infographics, etc.), and examples. Other types participant wrote in a comment field include "odd configuration workarounds" "before product release accurate information to obtain", "Visio diagrams of product compatibility" and "full installation video to terminate the end of the Citrix product."

a good survey would not be complete without a price! One participant, Ankur Khare, was selected at random to win a $ 100 gift card as a token of our appreciation.

Thanks to all our respondents, as well as the customers who have some spent one-on-one time to check prototypes and give us ideas. Your feedback is the template for our redesign.

We will in the near future publish more blogs that specifically focus on the quality of content, and we would love your feedback. To participate in the future in research meetings eDocs, leave us a comment or send us a tweet @citrixedocs.

Quad-Bypass: The Enterprise Mobility worst-case scenario Security [VIDEO]

Quad-Bypass: The Enterprise Mobility worst-case scenario Security [VIDEO] -

At Citrix, our definition of a quadruple bypass is a BYOD users on a consumer device sensitive corporate information and go directly use in the cloud. It really represents the worst-case scenario enterprise mobility secure. This approach completely bypasses the control and transparency of IT and it is frightening common in today's organizations. There are good reasons for this, of course. Consumer devices are very popular and easy to use. Cloud applications, people can save time and get their work done more easily, and they can also drive value for the business. The problem comes when cloud applications are used in the wrong way, jeopardizing the sensitive data of the organization, security and compliance.

IT policies and user training can only go so far, the quadruple bypass realistic to prevent if that's the best solution for the needs of someone and it seems unlikely that it will find out, it will happen. This makes it necessary to provide people with an incentive to work with him and his infrastructure, especially if it. To sensitive data and applications The best incentive is a superior user experience, delivered proactive and designed to the needs of the people better to meet "than the unmanaged alternative.

I had the opportunity Kurt Roemer interview Strategist Citrix Chief Security to his thoughts fourfold organizations deal and strategies take mobility safely embrace and control consumer devices such as Android and iOS devices.

What do you think the three most important reasons why are the Quadruple bypass plagues most organizations? Kurt explained how Citrix secure access to applications, desktops, data and services from any device that empower over any network, mobile workers to decide with the freedom and flexibility in how they work , delivers. with the simple, convenient user experience of your workforce requirements and installation of complete technology for MDM, MAM, containerization, application and desktop virtualization solution allows enough flexibility safe mobility in the right way for any kind of information application to support and role in the organization. Desired State Configuration: what is it? (Part 1)

9:04 PM Add Comment
Desired State Configuration: what is it? (Part 1) -

Desired state configuration (DSC) is v4 (many people call him only PowerShell v4) that ships natively with Windows Server 2012 R2 and a function of the Windows Management Framework. 8.1

One thing to be clear on; DSC is not a single thing, it is a feature with different components. And this is an exploration of the main components at a high level to understand all the concepts. the moving parts Can one look at it, working together to enable DSC; the configuration word, configuration Local Configuration Manager, resource provider, WinRM, PowerShell.

Before I want to get deep into it I some fellow MVPs thank the award range from PowerShell helped me with a few things as I worked through my understanding. I also want to record some time to thank the product team at MSFT, to sit with me and talk as customers enter to help me better understand and give them feedback in my scenarios and my customer scenarios.

The MVP Community give out is large produce resources and communications. Here are some good resources:

  • The DSC-Book - A free resource from Don Jones and Steve Murarwski
  • Windows PowerShell desired state configuration Revealed - of Ravikanth Chaganti
  • PowerShell.org and PowerShellMagazine.com

let's start with the first stumbling block start: Windows remote management (WinRM)

WinRM is required for the DSC to a push receive and process configurations in or pull model (more on this later). Let me say here that if you learn and follow all of the examples and apply a configuration; You will probably use a configuration interactively at the console (push model). This will just work out of the box, if your goal is Server 2012 R2. This is out of the box does not, if your goal is the Windows 8.1.

The difference? WinRM is enabled by default on the server and is disabled by default on the client. So plan accordingly, or you will get error messages that you can not apply your configuration because WinRM is not running.

PowerShell is the basic technology and the owning product team at MSFT. If you follow the latest PowerShell developments you hear about OMI. And if you listen recently to Jeffry Snover on DSC They talk mention of Monad hear manifesto, and the DSC is a component of the original Monad vision that is implemented as a "PowerShell".

The Local Configuration Manager (LCM) may be used as the means to be thought that it happen.

, the LCM is essentially a service that handles the configuration, analyzes the configuration dependencies screened defined in the configuration, then the configuration makes happen. The key thing is to understand that the entire configuration will be applied in the security context of the local system. By default, this may not have access to anything outside of the machine, and can act only on objects that are local to the machine. For example; When a software package is installed, the package on the machine on site must be, or the machine must be able to gain access to its security context.

you have the DSC no management layer? It is the lowest level, the execution engine / Enabler / Riker Picard (this is the analogy that the PowerShell team originally used).

In fact, companies such as Puppet and Chef are already the advantages of DSC take to do to use it to not threaten their dirty work and be by him. And DSC has MSFT as VM extension allows configurations Azure apply IaaS virtual machines via the API. Even if you SCVMM service templates or Windows Azure Pack Gallery items; Also you can use DSC since then to end engine that performs the configuration actions.

Now we come down to the configuration itself.

The configuration is a MOF format document that defined the end result that the Local Configuration Manager needs to happen. The MOF can be generated in a number of ways, but the simplest is to use by far the configuration keyword within a PowerShell script.

The configuration keyword is almost the last Enabler. You can use it in a script call this particular matter to define a configuration called. This is then implemented as a MOF file. This is in turn applied to the LCM. Which in turn makes it that way.

Well, it's the last Enabler. The resource provider

These are special modules -. They are built object and all their work is to bring the state of some resource, Ask the state of some resource, and then test the state of some resource. The resource is the element manipulated

There are suppliers of resources, which are integrated into the operating system. Archives (handling ZIP files), file (file manipulation), package (install / uninstall packages), and so on. Each of them is in a configuration with the state you stated wish to have. And you can unpack actions as an archive to copy a file to a specific path, the installation / uninstallation of a specific MSI, and so on.

There is also a framework for the custom resource provider. This is to extend support for third-party applications such as XenDesktop or the community to make it possible to build modules of MSFT provided far more than those who do.

There are also provided MSFT 'x' resource provider. But frankly, I hope PowerShell v5 many of them will include at a release level of quality. Until then, they are just like any other user-defined resource.

A Skit Illumina Mobile Video Quality of Experience -

We wanted a commercial espousing the impact of a quality mobile video experience (to share in this case, on the action). Check out this 70 seconds video skit with the following loose translation of the dialogue in mind. .

i Leonidas, the leader of 300 Sparta men are saying an encouraging speech to his army: "My brothers, Be bold, they can have a large army, but we are 300 Sparta man."

ii. The Man Behind warns his leader: "In a moment, we are only 3 Sparta men due to the very low speed internet the guy watching this video"

iii. Update: "We have now become 3.5 Sparta Men"

iv. Then the leader gives the order "Let us escape!"

Now a slow loading video not appear exactly at the end so lacking with half a character, but it illustrates the concept, along with some humor. 😉 I hope it brought a smile to your day.

Desired State Configuration: with XenDesktop DSC resource (Part 5)

Desired State Configuration: with XenDesktop DSC resource (Part 5) -

In my last article I discussed the built-in the desired state configuration (DSC) resources with a Citrix license to standing Server. All but one of the resources that I used shipped in the box with Server 2012 R2 -. And one could argue that I get my license file and install it really does not have to use the custom resource to

I have to install the package resource to the Citrix License Server.

the packet resource for the license server works well, this is a really quick and easy to install. But what do you do if you require an installer, the restart of the mid-stream? Or even several reboots?

Some of you who XenApp or XenDesktop installed over the years, know that these additional takes time and you have to follow your checklist or the wizard, to ensure that you missed a step. What if you do not need to do that? Or what if we could greatly simplify the whole process?

Here is an example that I think that you like.

Recently a Technology Preview is released resource for XenDesktop from a desired state configuration. You can find it here: http://www.citrix.com/go/xendesktop-for-the-private-cloud.html

to place the admin guide and the module in the PowerShell path on the target (and the machine where you can create configurations) and move forward.

I use this in the next examples, it can give a brief description.

[1945001Dies] brings some of the previous articles together

Line 9 - .. 12 coupled to the line 47, the local configuration manager (LCM) to even reboot handle

rows 15 to 20 creates my unzip and logging path

lines 24 - 30 my media unzips. I know what is the name of my media and I expect that the media will be delivered to the same location where the script is run by another agent or process - such as an external process to the media and this script download the same path and then runs this script

lines 33 - 38 .. call the XenDesktop resource and install one of the roles defined

If the role of the installation is that the system a restart requires that LCM handles. When you restart it processes the configuration again until the XenDesktop resource returns 'true' for the "present" is set guarantee.

To control this is usually a restart of a session Host or VDA tis could be two reboots. The big thing for me is that it totally hands off. DevOps in XenDesktop world.

Personally, I hope that you check this out, and I'm looking for feedback, where they need to go next, and when it is useful to you. So please, speak in the comments on, participate in the forum or the survey

Next - .. Can show that this all in action in some real applications

A Citrix Life - Why should I work for you back -

You think how many times in previous interviews you have asked " Why do you? want to work here? " tempting you to answer a simple question, in fact, free and as casual as possible, but it can for each applicant asked at each level. However, you can use your answer to determine your interview, close follow-up questions or start a final declaration as your interview. If not ready, someone can answer, "I am an engineer and there is an opening here." Although it is apparent presents the opportunity to enable you and present who you are, what you are and what you offer. Instead, what if the interviewer asked (s) " Why should I work for you? "

My name is Livy Gonzalez and I was born in Asuncion, Paraguay, and have more than 30 years living in South Florida. My career in information technology has worked over 13 years spans many roles in the field. I joined Citrix in 2010 as Technical Support Engineer on the XenApp team.

I mean on-site interview remember very well, as if it were yesterday. I have presented different types of questions (technical, technological scenarios and case management) and provided answers to the best of my capabilities. Later I was asked if I had any questions for the interviewers.

I gladly took the opportunity and every interviewer asked how long they worked at Citrix and why they like it here? Hear their answers I asked myself: " When was the last time I shared their enthusiasm " After the interview I sat in my car and noticed how impressed I felt by the interviewers body language , the ability to conduct casual conversation and their overall positive attitude. This may not seem important, some, but for me it is like a "Green Flag" was to have, and from personal experience, it is not something that you would frequently encounter during questioning recognized as void in my own professional endeavor.

you probably have the Citrix mantra heard " work from any device at any time and to work anywhere better and live better. " This is our message, and how we empower end users work to new define. I am proud to know that my role here at Citrix is in the latest technology for the application, desktop virtualization and mobility.

This is definitely the highlight of my career and none of it could be possible to work with a leader without the most important component, and that is "we, the employee (s)". It is easier said than done, but we are on the way and talk about it, because a paramount factor here and it is our culture and without it, we are just another software company. In 2013, I was nominated by my peers for "The Stevie Awards for Sales & Customer Service" and won GOLD. I can not begin to feel to know to tell my colleagues, evaluated around the world my work ethic, ensure integrity and commitment that our customers receive the world-class support best. The moment the plane to Las Vegas aboard as I stood to get on stage my award and the following week return a true testament be seen what me for Citrix working lured. That's my fit, Citrix enabled me further cultivate my interests in technology, my work style and personality. In recent weeks, I asked several senior support engineers, managers and other management members, " Why can you like working here and why you stay ?" I have their responses categorized under:

  • The Citrix culture
    • Everyone is approachable and always helpful
    • Collaborative and supportive
    • leadership and mentoring
    • Innovative platform where ideas and feedback of our products can affect
  • Work-Life balance :
    • flexibility is paramount and Citrix possible makes this
    • I can work from anywhere, at home or in a cafe
    • I'm several states away just as productive to working while our family visited
    • Encouraged back to help and give to the community
  • career growth and development :
    • Support Engineers have a high ceiling ability to expand to other roles and positions
    • Technical and training labs accessible 24 × 7

Basics of Citrix Application Firewall performance and safety

Basics of Citrix Application Firewall performance and safety -

The recent NSS Labs Web Application Firewall (WAF) provides sample NetScaler Application Firewall as a leader in the recommended list. As an architect and director of products responsible for NetScaler AppFirewall, here are the underlying principles, the Citrix Application Firewall awesome. (Treated HTTP)

All HTTP traffic as First Class

for layer 7 processing, the traffic between protocol layers in NetScaler defaults optimized for the fast path and uniformly in the software. Due to this construction, we are able to extract the most out of the x86 processor and maintain a consistently high performance. Every once we see in a while alternative approaches where the first few bytes are tested before they try to short-circuit data forwarding hardware, but we have consistently wrong seen leading results. Concocted marketing performance tests look good, but does not match the reality. For us it's about making the kind of how we do it the best way possible.

power of small batches

When working with HTTP handling, the traditional approach of breaking levels in a number of different steps upwards, working in different processes or steps inefficient. Among other things, comes from a reason for this inefficiency to reconsider the analysis of the requests repeatedly that adds for no good reason, a ton of overhead. What we we have the NetScaler architected instead do is take a piece of requests and they run through the whole chain of actions (parsing, inspection, etc.) in a single pass over the payload. This is part of the reason why we, as other solutions significantly higher speeds on an x86.

A side effect of this way of data processing approach is data locality . Because we believe that the requirements in the CPU cache, the code that needs to access it never waiting for a cache miss. The result is a super-fast series of actions. We are pretty picky about this approach and when adding new features, we make sure that we keep to handle each transaction in this way. The consistent application of this method results in great performance.

More speed and scaling

By the end of this year we will publish more obvious performance / scalability improvements. In terms of performance we are optimizing our Single Pass request stream processing mechanisms to improve performance! .! In addition, we these optimizations are to take and use them on the NetScaler clusters that crazy big numbers for real testing means

Safety First

Safety speed trumped - always. Our approach to security has always been a safe attitude of the box to offer while it easy to make fine-tuning in a way that minimizes the error. This narrow focus on accuracy is best reflected in the NSS Labs report where NetScaler blocks 100% of the attacks during the test.

So you have it ... the secret ingredient that the NetScaler AppFirewall makes awesome!

Citrix Universal Print Server (UPS) - What has changed in 2014 and what is expected to forward

12:56 PM Add Comment
Citrix Universal Print Server (UPS) - What has changed in 2014 and what is expected to forward -
UPS session at # CitrixTex2014 - so much interest that we got the main stage!

Sometimes a product manager to see a technology that either as cutting or essential that you add it to your portfolio. I joined the Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, HDX Product Management Team as Product Manager for "HDX Graphics" to my area on the GPU-accelerated projects I expand the integration of NVIDIA vgpu on such work had and enables GPU adoption in OpenStack, Intel GVT with XenServer. As soon as I stepped discovered a few products that I wanted! Citrix Universal Print Server (UPS) and Citrix Universal Print Driver (UPD). My title has now changed to "product manager HDX and peripherals" that a pressure medium, USB Client Drive Mapping and a lot of fun things like haptic devices (eg Connexion 3D space mouse and virtual reality headsets!).

The pressure is more important

UPS and UPD functionality offer that is both fundamental and important, but these technologies are cutting edge and no other VDI solution matches what we this by integrating in HDX (see here) do.

  • As my colleague wrote in an e-mail, reassuring after he learned of my new enthusiasm " think about it: do you have published applications and desktops, what to do next Your users ? you start with them, carrying out day to day tasks similar to traditional desktops ... such as printing, for example. Ubiquitous as it may seem, pressure is one of the most demanding and critical part of the virtual desktop strategy "

is Why virtualize a complex problem when printing?

printers are notorious for their diversity, a simple task by an order of magnitude in the whimsical variety of hardware drivers, or the way can inflate before it is printed. If the virtual desktop and the local printer are separated by WAN, is that the thing does not help. Citrix has gone with its customers through this pain, and we Phaser write launched project back in 2011, the rules of the virtual printing new. The result was a set of technologies that shape not only end user printing experience easy and enjoyable, but also optimize print jobs and make the administrative task of printer management efficiency.

For an overview of UPS and UPD make, you should have the "Citrix Virtual Desktop manual" check-out, which has a whole chapter on solutions and use.

For recent months, the technology hardships we have on the next generation of UPS / UPD projects work, and improve the scalability and WAN performance. Plus some great new user interface and documentation is on the way!

A Steep Personal Learning Curve

While vgpu an easy transition project for me was working as a new project manager on the product as an engineer, UPS and UPD have been a new challenge and it's nice that resource to have been given and remit our printing solution to the next level to take. As is often the case with a version 1.0 product had the first version of UPS some shortcomings in debugging information, logging and documentation, but a Super Smart architecture with lots of potential. Bring to productisation the next generation has a lot of planning and a holistic approach to give us a rock-solid base to go with the specification forward. The sharp-eyed among you will have begun to notice the issue of the formation of a pretty smart team via Citrix: Now

  • The Citrix XenDesktop handbook has its own, updated printing chapter (see here would like to see), regular updates are now planned, so, if you please outside below me address specific architectures or questions!
  • Better user to expect information on the levels of compression and data planes can be found here
  • a new scalability to do guide, as a reference for new implementations in the works is
  • an aggressive series of software enhancements addressing scalability, corner cases and configuration niggles
  • Increased information of specialized support for SMEs, such as Marek Dresler blogs

I have no specific information about new features and time may be, but I can call the move a couple of projects ...

  • an extended test Citrix Ready printer manufacturer certification program developed and enhanced drivers test tools in collaboration with Citrix Ready printer Manufacturer partner manufacturer ~~ POS = TRUNC
  • defensive again architecture to protect the user from problems due to leaky third-party drivers
  • support causes for new server operating systems
  • new features

work we do with the pressure ISVs and support in the use of third-printing Solutions?

Although we put a lot of resources in our own printing solutions, we are planning our specialists third-party solutions also continue to work. We have a number of partners such as printing Cortado ThinPrint, UniPrint triCerat ScrewDrivers and solutions. These solutions can in the most demanding justice printing needs and we with them, who love the options they offer many existing customers. As such, we are determined to ensure support providers and work with them seamless interoperability. Anyness and supporting customer choice vendor lock-in by working with third-party is a core Citrix avoid value I have blogged about previously. We will continue to work with third-party and promote their wide solutions, in fact, we are a Webinar on Secure Mobile Printing Solutions UniPrint to 29 presented th in October 2014 details here.

Final Thoughts

some people were confused really about my fascination and enthusiasm for printing and features such as stapling. HDX GPU-accelerated graphics are Flash, Poster-Boy features that will delight users. Why, when I work with one of the formula, sexiest range of XenDesktop (HDX 3D Pro) already I'm obsessed with "dull" old print, but no one is interested in printing !!! No, not if your graphics are a bit fuzzy because your network has problems, you are likely to live, if pressure goes your entire organization and purchasing system, it can not! I love products to worry the people who make the company function!

Technically, although cloud and VDI printing all the elements that I love and the great of the HDX-team experience in negative networking, use ICA protocols, image manipulation and compression. Documents consist of images and text, and sends it from a distance to be printed there as many elements of the same compression and network considerations that we apply to Citrix Receiver and our mobile graphics technologies. We carry in mobile and remote graphics and are the perfect team to do so in the mobile printing! The integration of these on pressure optimizations with Citrix NetScaler is another fascinating whole system solution.

I have the paperless office found is rare but we also look at exciting technologies, where you will be able to traditional print documents to the readers your phone without the hassle of driver installation ... . so watch this space 😉 I never thought I would be interested in so deep stapling options! Having spent most of the last years trying to live and breathe GPU virtualization projects that I do not think I would be lucky enough to get a further differentiation product so soon!

Update the database connection strings in XenDesktop 7.x

Update the database connection strings in XenDesktop 7.x -

Some time ago, I have to update a post about the connection string for mirroring. Since then I have had other requests for connection string manipulations. So they in a post with an update for I will draw 7.6 Availability Groups and script updates.

XenDesktop 7.6

XenDesktop 7.6 introduced to the Analytics Service , which must be his DB connection string updated. The service is responsible for sending information to Citrix as part of CEIP

The only change to the commands in the previous blog, the need to also use cmdlets .:
Set-AnalyticsDBConnection
to update the DbConnection. If you run only after you use:
Set-SfDBConnection
then it should update correctly

Always On Availability Groups

Many customers have begun , Always On Availability Groups to use for their HA database solution. For the most part the use of availability groups is invisible to XenDesktop. However, there is a recommended setting that Microsoft say should be a part of the connection string MultiSubnetFailover = true . The option is recommended both a subnet and multiple subnets environments, and it speeds up recovery when an HA event occurs.

This option is in .NET versions only available that have been patched to close it. Depending on the version of XenDesktop you will use depends on the KB patch you must add support
.Net 3.5 SP1 , Patch with this KB :. Http://support.microsoft .com / kb / 2654347
.Net 4.0 update is recommended at least 4.0.2, but 4.0.3: http://support.microsoft.com/kb / 20211
.Net 4.5 , nothing to mend, the support has been built into this version of .NET.

When you run on a supported version of .NET, you need to update the connection strings. To do this, the changes for mirroring is very similar, you need the connection string zero, it then returns to the same set, but with additional option "; MultiSubnetFailover = true". not support

Tagged: 'MultiSubnetFailover'
Windows 7 or 08 R2, you can get the above error message on the node configuration of Studio. This is because the studio MMC used the .NET 7 and 08 R2 to use 3.5 SP1 runtime on Windows. To avoid the error, you need to apply the patch .Net 3.5 SP1. Note the services the .Net 4.x runtime. (This section was recorded on April 15, 2015)

Updated Script

I have the script also updates since the last post to include the analysis service. While doing so, I also broke the core functions in its own file and created some wrapper scripts to use these functions. New scripts are bundled into a .zip:
https://citrix.sharefile.com/d/sc237fc7d5ed4f0fb

The scripts PowerShell v3 actually need (I can be a part of it in a module and turn might be able to switch PowerShell v2, but is v3 needed to load the core script in the other scripts.)

tested the script on Server 2012 R2, with XenDesktop 7.5 and XenDesktop 7.6. Note that this The scripts provided are as a complete site administrator and local admin PowerShell window

DBConnectionStringFuncs.ps1 - that is the core script, and performs the actual. Job. It contains general functions that the following scripts then with
Change_XD_Failover_Partner_v1.ps1 - .. This is similar to the previous script that I wrote and is used to update the failover partner
Change_XD_To_ConnectionString PS1 - this is done in connection strings passed and uses it to create a very generic version
Change_XD_To_MultiSubnetFailover.ps1 -. This switches the adding and removing MultiSubnetFailover = true. IE is run once and the option is added, run it again, and the options away
Change_XD_To_Null.ps1 -. This is a reset of all connection strings on the local host as something went wrong. Note that because this is the connection strings set to zero, it is actually the ddc in an "initial" enabling state. IE if you run Studio, it will ask if you want to create a website, or accede to another ddc. This is useful, something has not gone right somewhere, and a reset is necessary because then again the connection strings can try set to.

If you do some kind of connection string manipulation, feel free to look at how the Change_XD scripts to perform the functions in DBConnectionStringFuncs.ps1 use

Has Microsoft just #FixVDA? -

When I read my morning Twitter feed, I saw a tweet from one of our CTPs (Dane Young @youngtech) that I woke up better than my morning tea ever could

Who with a passion for the VDI (XenDesktop) space in arms about the way been Microsoft VDI licenses in the past has been of the device. In RDS (XenApp) space Licensing has for a long time thanks to the RDS CAL per user. To illustrate the differences between these licensing models I describe this video shot about a year ago that generated about 2k hits (that's a lot for a boring video about Microsoft Licensing)

This discrepancy in licensing has created a problem for organizations that want to push VDI, but not in the way it is licensed. Consider the way many users operate these days, how many of you reading this using only a single device? My guess is that every last person preparing this blog numerous devices. According to Forbes, the average mobile user has 3.5 devices. In my experience the average geek 10. :) has The point is, if I want to access my Windows desktop / app, and if my corporation would VDA licenses, they would need a license per non-Windows device. A change of licenses made it so allows a license to 5 devices, but that was not enough for me and many others. We wanted to per-user licensing. I always liked the idea that I have a badge in my wallet, that if I was from the approval Police pulled over they would say: "This person is licensed to use this software." That's what it looks like Microsoft has done with the latest license rules. License to use the user the device is not

No word yet on the cost of the new license, my guess is that it will be at a premium, but even so, revision is fixed by this and list prices are all be agreed. So far as I am concerned #FixVDA is done, but I can not leave it there ...

What is not resolve this License Microsoft Services Provider License Agreement (SPLA), which is important to the cloud-based desktop (DaaS) market. I for one would love to see SPLA for Windows client to, it would certainly our CSPs and our efforts to Citrix Workspace Services help. But VDA on a per user basis is a massive change for Microsoft and although I am no longer an analyst, I really have a hard time Microsoft to these in my previous role I have done may or may not have multiple presentation #FixVDA, as the hashtag (I admit nothing!) :). I know I changed jobs, but I wanted to give our partners over at Microsoft a huge shout out on this one. Great job gang! This change is a great opportunity for us at Citrix and VDI for industry in general

. PS: If you are interested, take Gartner, I would recommend you to read Mark Lockwood blog. It covers the now and I expect that his day got to do with this news much more.

The expansion of the 3D application display compatibility in XenDesktop - to set blacklist, an intermediate corrective

The expansion of the 3D application display compatibility in XenDesktop - to set blacklist, an intermediate corrective -

Alexander Pope Quote I have recently a little-known Remedy asked us to overcome sometimes use rare compatibility issues between our 3D drivers and certain applications.

When we are aware of these problems that we are working as quickly as possible with the 3rd party vendor to resolve the issue and future versions or to ensure us and them to resolve the issue in which product (or both) the incompatibility is found. In the meantime, we sometimes use a workaround than "blacklisting" known to be a customer to ensure to no downtime lead in production, while we and / or the third party provider to fix the problem. As such, this is a temporary measure, as if the problem is often fixed in the next version of the application or XenDesktop advice is superfluous.

We have never published this workaround, since it is provided only as a fallback mechanism allow a customer to continue unimpeded short. But "a little knowledge" of workaround has semi-public and public consultation, which we found was limited, partial and misleading. As such, we were better to give a full explanation to the customer, so that they understood what they were doing, and to explain some of the information available. Indeed, " A little learning is a dangerous thing " ....

What an application to do and is a blacklist?

blacklist an application means that when an application queries for 3D GPU support will prevent it from finding and so find any. Consequently, the application is to use and draw fallback mechanism for the respective applications, where one exists, and if no fallback mechanism exists, will not be executed.

Each common use of Microsoft (GDI etc.) and then be a fallback mechanism by them for evolved 2D technologies in increasingly able to take advantage of 3D GPUs, where available. Many other applications, such as Google Chrome similar hardware opportunistic. Other applications such as Google Earth is not without 3D GPU support run

symptoms of the interoperability problem that interpret the study to an application can be a blacklist of benefits

contain

Typical symptoms of interoperability issue can .:

  • objects if between browser tabs switching re not or incorrectly deleted or partially repaint occurs (ie note obsolete data)
  • application flicker
  • objects to fail to paint all (missing labels on icons, empty tabs)
  • slow application rendering, and the application has a faster non-3D rendering fallback

How a single application on the blacklist .:

  1. Open task Manager applications tab, then right-click the app and select Go to process. Note the process name, for example "App.exe"
  2. Create a REG_DWORD registry key "app.exe" with the value 0:.
    • XD XD 7.1 and 7.5:
      • x86: reg add HKLM software Citrix vd3d compatibility / v app.exe / t REG_DWORD / f / d 0
      • x64: reg add HKLM software Wow6432Node Citrix vd3d compatibility / v app.exe / t REG_DWORD / f / d 0
    • XD 7.6 both x86 and x64:
      • reg HKLM software Citrix vd3d compatibility / v app.exe / t REG_DWORD Add / f / d 0

Like all apps at once blacklisted:

  1. Open task Manager applications tab and then the app, right-click and select Go to process. Note the process name, for example "App.exe"
  2. Create a REG_DWORD registry key "app.exe" with the value 0:.
    • XD XD 7.1 and 7.5:
      • x86: reg add HKLM software Citrix vd3d compatibility / v * / t REG_DWORD / f / d 0
      • x64: reg add HKLM software Wow6432Node Citrix vd3d compatibility / v * / t REG_DWORD / f / d 0
    • XD 7.6 both x86 and x64:
      • reg HKLM software Citrix vd3d compatibility / v * / t REG_DWORD / f / d 0
      • [add

wildcards are not supported. The asterisk * has a special meaning "all apps", but is not a traditional Wildcard. several applications to the blacklist as both appa.exe and appb.exe must individually by performed a registry key for each app.

The above commands includes the registry key to 0, this is a guaranteed value of the application blacklist that we sometimes use advised users.

There are in fact other values of these keys, the are reserved for internal use and development debug. These values can actually change from version to version, and as such are not a remedy, a customer is recommended, without using the Council of Citrix support and as a short term version specific remedy. However, it seems that a few KB articles have been published using other values like this:

  • http: // support.citrix.com/article/CTX137214

Where the key = 8, this value and other our developers fine-grained control mechanism different drivers provide mechanisms or change the hierarchy of behavior off. They should have not probably but now published without further background advice that they were in the wild except we felt it was better to explain so that each user who had understood the effects applied, borders and background. Any value other than 0 is only valid for a specific release XD

RemotePC -. A recent well-known problem in which the blacklist can help

There is a current known interoperability problem with some Microsoft 3D applications in which to help a blacklist. be executed in 3D modeling applications, and the session is then transferred reversed from the console of a remote connection or ica, some of these applications may hang, tried by a failing recurrent call in the DWM to find a service. We are actively working this be taken a short-term problem in the eye at a solution to this problem with Microsoft and as such. As such, if you read this blog in the future, you should examine this issue even exists.

in fact, there is a remedy to you un-hang the application in which a user can use the DWM restart of going from the Start menu:

  • workplace - "enable desktop composition"> Settings-> Advanced system settings

, and then select the "performance" element "settings," then unchecking and rechecking the box point (see figure). click between each switching the user clicks "Accept" has

Win 7 and RDP 16-bit color depth. - A current known limitation

Our current WDDM driver not yet been implemented in 16bit color was outdated in fact 16-bit color support from Microsoft in Windows 8.x. In Windows 7 although DWM (Aero) was optional and therefore 16-bit color was still allowed over RDP, which means that interoperability gap, there are. We can very well look retrospectively support for 16-bit RDP connections introduce, as we have many users appreciate long update and upgrade cycles. In this scenario, a black list of applications to bypass the restriction.

Upgrading XenDesktop after applications blacklist

As I have emphasized, this is a temporary solution much that we, while we use to work with 3 rd vendors to ensure interoperability across the primary driver mechanisms. As such, if you have implemented this, you should always check to set the blacklist, if you update the application or XenDesktop to a new version, since it is very likely that the need to avoid the problem no longer exists. a new version of XenDesktop installation is to delete the registry key.

Known applications requiring a blacklist

If you have questions or applications have found that please do from blacklist benefited ask questions or comment on this forum thread , here. Please keep in mind that this procedure is that may be on a particular topic in a specific version and patch level of a product and is suitable as such, you should only examine this if you have a problem and that the information is written Community verified only instead consulting Citrix Support, unless otherwise specified and should be reviewed in our own environment.

It is very important for us that you let us know if you find that this remedy would useful as we. Prioritizing solving these issues with the utmost priority Because this gives us the opportunity to examine the need to avoid the problem and eliminate it. Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp to Citrix Cloud Platform Amazon re: Invent 2014 -

re on Amazon: Invent conference in Las Vegas this week, Joe Inzerillo CTO of MLB Advanced Media, gave one of the more interesting parts of Wednesday Keynote. MLB Advanced Media was established in 00 formed by the club owners of Major League Baseball digital experiences, to offer her fans. These experiences include managing to deliver all League Web properties and various forms of interactive media. Joe walked around the league in baseball stadiums for some of the latest technologies and showed how they use on-the-fly analytics to change how fans experience the game. Even for knowledgeable fans, these new findings possible partly through cloud computing, delivering astonishing new insights. I could add a touch biased about all this as I am a baseball fan and told a San Francisco Giants fan. Wrapping-up the speech, Joe showed some great pictures and analyzes a critical World Series Game 7 game that helped propel the Giants to victory.

A key takeaway from this session

Even very traditional can benefit from adding new approaches to pre-established fashion long Institutions (Major League Baseball was founded in 1869) to do things ,

on a variety of fronts is Citrix provides similar new approaches to things for IT groups do.

Citrix to the way end users consume applications and desktops from anywhere and help IT transform to deliver services faster and more reliably changed. In the Citrix booth at the re: Invent conference, one of the demonstrations we show how Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenApp used on Citrix Cloud Platform. Moving virtual desktop workloads from a traditional deployment cloud infrastructure decouples the management of the resources of the Desktop Management underlying helps enable operational efficiency and faster deployment of new desktops future.

For many people, the idea of virtual desktops that is running on cloud infrastructure new, but actually has many advantages. For example, IT is gaining insight into usage of compute, storage and network resources for more informed and scaling operations decisions. Another advantage used areas, the availability of Citrix Cloud Platform offers disaster recovery and high availability for desktop workloads to bring. There are other benefits as well, but the point is that a new approach to an existing way of doing things by adding you can uncover new advantages and opportunities.

Files - Fund - the case for augmented intelligence - and Unifyle -

Every now and then I get a request for a particular record of my research career. I have it. Last about 15 years ago, and it takes time to dig it * from my archives The same thing happens with many of my other electronic values (old files, old photos, etc). This is simply not to be so complicated. Why is this difficult? It's all been on the media but on backup media, various cloud storage, etc. Part of the problem is widespread, that I still need to know where to look. But why is it to me? If the system does not, can help my computer memory? Why are we so far help of my computer just to me on these things out? I'd much rather or expect it to be a "to be augmented intelligence 'closer -". Increase've productivity ", where all my systems frictionless offer

Augmented Intelligence

Before, I in labor? Field of artificial intelligence, and it is an area to see now great interest, however, brings the term enormous luggage and confusion. (check Jaron Lanier edge products and the discussion that follows.) I prefer about using these technologies to think, and when building systems thinking help us better to better the general computing environment work, and work with us on the side, things to solve, we not well automatically. in fact, before Citrix, I was with a company that focuses explicitly for pathologists to Augmented intelligence. (drawing a long bow, many would tell us that this is the essence of being human that we use tools to enhance our intelligence (Clark)).

I like to consider much of the focus of Citrix to make work "work" as the steps towards the ideals of "Augmented intelligence" - helping people do more - helps us, our personal and corporate memories accessed wherever where are - will help us use new, better, faster tools of all kinds. The future of software defined work continues this journey to improve our skills so that we more effectively and in a better position. I expect it to benefit from Artificial Intelligence technologies.

Seamlessly find my files?

I started this blog with the idea of accessing the challenge of finding the solution and my personal files. This is also a challenge for companies. The files can be kept in many different places, systems, both on-premise and in cloud services (Share File, Box, SharePoint, etc.). Often easily find these files is a challenge, but to work alone providing safe and reliable methods with them. This is a challenge for the individual, and much more increase for companies where make the safety and regulatory requirements, it is very difficult, with easy access to enterprise storage staff. "

I want a present company, and listen to them to find file your thoughts on it. Unifyle owned Startup Accelerator Citrix with a company focused mobile solution to make it for every employee easily with any company and to work. you have a mobile solution for enterprise search and access to multiple file services on Prem and in the cloud, where the files examined then opened can and processed free of trusted are and secure Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Dr. Michael Harries, Chief Technologist, Senior Director, Citrix Startup Accelerator
