XenServer 6.5 is out !!

Last summer I blogging about interesting things going on in the XenServer team (see rumblings in XenServer.org and ramping started up XenServer). Today I am pleased to say that all that hard work has paid off. 6.5 XenServer (codename Creedence) is the best version of XenServer ever.

So what in XenServer 6.5 new? Many good things!

  • All 64-bit
  • Massive performance improvements
  • 50% increase in GPU density
  • The Return of the popular Workload Balancing (WLB) device
  • Numerous usability improvements

So, let's talk about some of these performance improvements. While XenServer has long been known for it's world-class computing power, we found that more and work workloads now bound always I / O. So the team put a massive effort into the data path through the network, and storage systems to improve. Here are some examples of benchmarks the performance of XenServer 6.5 vs. XenServer 6.2 (the last major release).

Who should be interested in XenServer 6.5? Firstly, who XenServer today is used, this is to find an important step upwards. Upgrade today and see the difference. Who else should be interested? Build a cloud? Xen project is the most popular hypervisor for the cloud and XenServer is the most popular, commercial distribution for Xen project. XenServer is an efficient, cost-effective and battle-tested choice for your cloud?

Are you using XenApp or XenDesktop? XenServer is the best choice for these environments as well. Not only is XenServer included for free (you significant cost savings), but you get a single stop for the support. Perhaps more importantly, the XenServer and XenDesktop teams work closely together to offer world first access as vgpu capability to new technologies, remote desktops.

Are your virtualizing enterprise computing workloads? XenServer is a powerful, cost-effective, easy-to-use option for your needs. Without separate management servers required as live migration and HA for features, it is not be easier to get to get started. And, with years of experience both Linux and Windows workloads running, it is a good choice, no matter what operating system you virtualize.

The XenServer team firing on all cylinders firing right now, and there are many more innovations in the pipeline for the coming year. Engineers are already at work on our next two releases and they are going to be pretty exciting. Stay tuned for more information on the tuned here. Wait until you see what we do with Linux containers!
