Citrix Director 7.6 Deep Dive Part 1: License Monitoring -

With Director 7.6, we really wanted to make sure that users know when they are going to be affected by a license problem. To fix this, license alerts from the license server is now being made available in the dashboard view in Director 7.6. This new feature provides a better insight into the licensing status of XenApp / XenDesktop so administrators aware of impending current license conditions, which may affect the functionality of the product. Licensing error in an environment can cause major failures or degraded service for customers and in earlier versions of XenApp / XenDesktop, it is difficult to recognize when licensing issues your site affect or influence over user connections.

Subsequent grace

In previous versions of XenApp and XenDesktop, if the user of licenses expire they receive session rejections on the license policy engine. To address this limitation, we have a new concept called Supplemental Grace Period (SWP). During the Supplemental grace period, the license will grant PolicyEngine unlimited connections, a time window has to purchase additional licenses. SGP will be granted on the consumption of licenses to allow you to add an additional 15-day window for fixing the issue. After the SGP regular license limits are enforced.

Director dashboard view

licensing status is provided this feature with two plates on dashboard view under a new tab available named. Licensing Status tab display identified the conditions by the license system (license server and controller). The number shown in the Licensing tab is the total number of warnings / alarms by the license server and each controller recognized

License Server Alerts Panel -. This shows status updates that are generated directly from the license server. Warnings / alarms are activated when triggered by the server. Alert messages include: Incomplete configuration, compatibility with the Delivery Controller and the activation of SGP. In addition, administrators are provided with recommended actions License Server to solve problems.

License Server panel

2. Delivery Controller Status Panel -Displays license server for each controller connection status. Delivery Controllers that belong to the same place and their License Server Connection Status will appear. Delivery Controller that can not connect to the license server, an alarm is triggered. The administrator can also view the license information for each delivery controller in Overview and Details tabs.

Delivery Controller panel

a) Overview field: Contains license server status details that SGP state and the remaining time before the grace period expiration. An alarm is activated if the time limit has expired, as the purchased limits are applied and no licenses are granted.

Overview

b) Details box: Displays the further details of the licensing status with the Delivery Controller. It is displayed in detail on the state of grace for the license server, and also the last licensing event timestamp. The fully qualified domain of the licensing server name, port used, product output of the license application, product ID, and the licensing model be used, recorded under Details Panel.

Alerts vs. Alarm

Alerts generated customers to consult, if compounds refuse licensing reasons. These alerts provide warnings and usually contain warning text and displayed in orange. Licensing Alarms occur if the licensing is configured incorrectly, damaged or usage is not properly licensed. In these cases, immediate action should be taken. These alarms are displayed to the administrator in red

Below are screenshots showing the different license alarm / alarms scenarios

Alarm: ... licenses consumed exceed the threshold set

no licensing alerts

alarm threshold licensing

Administrators could set a threshold for the license use. If the licenses consumed exceeds the set limit, an alarm is generated and displayed in the License Server Panel in Director. The default limit is set at 0% but it can be configured with the following XenDesktop PowerShell command on the Delivery Controller, a custom threshold on

Set-ConfigSiteMetadata -. Name "LicensingAlertThreshold" -Value "0"

, the alarm is shown in the following screenshot Director added:

I have included a table showing for each of the different scenarios and the expected result.
