USA Freedom Act will limit NSA Spying

Last week the Senator Leahy introduced a bill that would put new limits on monitoring the NSA. If the USA FREEDOM Act 2014 (S. 2685) passes, it will be first law to limit the power of espionage NSA in almost thirty years.

The new version of the Senate of the United States FREEDOM Act would:

  • End the illegal collection of NSA phone records of millions of Americans by modifying one of the worst provisions of the PATRIOT Act, section 215
  • Create a special group lawyers who can advocate for privacy and civil liberties before the FISA Court, the secret court that approves plans supervision of the NSA
  • Provide new reporting requirements so that the NSA has to tell us how many people are actually monitored under its programs, including the program that allows the NSA to view the content American communications without a warrant

Act FREEDOM USA is a step on the way to victory. It addresses many of the current bad practices of the NSA and does several things, including changes to the FISA Court and increased reporting, we could not reasonably accomplish in one case. If we can pass this bill, we can show Congress and the world that the anti-movement monitoring is able to organize the defense of our rights and we will create the space and the political momentum for reforms to come to Congress and elsewhere.
