In an effort to increase security in their products and improve safety on the web, Google encouraged to other sites to enhance security in a move to SSL and HTTPS instead of HTTP. Leading by example, Google moved to Google.com searches SSL and they are planning on this equipment on all of their sites and almost all their other products. Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs already using SSL encryption.
