Gartner Symposium ITxpo 2014 Day 2 report -

I am on day 2 of the Gartner ITxpo 2014 As I mentioned in my first post in this series, I am blogging some the show -Highlights and findings from the keynotes and some of the session tracks. What is this show? According to Gartner, there are more than 3,000 CIOs at the fair, and total number of visitors including senior IT leaders is more than 8,500. That's a pretty impressive collection, and the size and scope allows Gartner in a large number of its analysts pull on each session tracks and influential IT leaders to speak to speak in the keynote sessions. Today's first keynote was by Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. We ended the day with Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple. Both calls were very good, very dedicated and very different. I have outlined some of the points that have been discussed below with two keynotes.

Steve Wozniak Keynote

I'll start with the keynote, the first finished the day. Steve Wozniak sat down with two Gartner analysts for a Q & A. Typically, what had happened, was asked a question, and then a rapid fire stream of consciousness followed in all sorts of interesting topics meandering and often "What did you say ending the Question?". Gartner aptly described Woz as founder of the movement Digital Humanist (Day 1 blog see more on what that is). I think that definitely fits, especially if a trash can shown on stage he noticed that she selected an image of a garbage can for the first Macintosh, because people, by one would know it, that's where you throw things. A brief listing of some of the other questions:

  • Which gadgets has Woz likes? He likes phones, not impressed yet with smart watches, he does like Google Glass and people wear it to him by people with strange tattoos and piercings recalls (and that's a good thing).
  • What advice he would give young engineers? Get excited about something, because if you are excited, you will expand your knowledge. Everything you do at work, try to find a way, if fun.
  • What advice for business? Try to find the next Steve Jobs, but not ask for help because he saw for the next Steve Jobs and has not found him. Stay close to get in your organization at universities and young builders. And if you build something, deal with things, the human way.

There was far more say than could here be captured, so short I just want the rest of the summarized by week only say it was fun, chaotic and cool. Hopefully there is room in the digital Humanist Club for many more people like Steve Wozniak.

Satya Nadella Keynote

Satya Nadella sat down for a much more serious Q & A session with two Gartner analysts and answered a wide range of issues. When asked how he wanted to make his mark at Microsoft, he replied that he was interested in Microsoft more to make his mark, and that it Microsoft's brand with a mobile first and cloud first philosophy. wanted

Mobile make First

Satya defined mobile First, unlike perhaps a similar definition a year ago would have found. While he admitted that he is glad to have Nokia as part of the Microsoft family, mobility for Microsoft now is the mobility of individuals, and all interact on the computing power for the whole day each. When asked whether Microsoft was in it to win in terms of mobility, Satya has yes, but you have to look through the right lens. Mobile is about how applications in the cloud connect, how to manage devices and identity for all platforms and how to build applications for all devices. Microsoft expects that all these areas to perform, and this includes Windows 10, the display it for all devices as a unifying platform. PCs, smartphones, tablets and maybe even sensors

cloud until

With cloud initially Satya responded to a question, the clouds are commoditizing, might lead to a "race to the bottom". He disagreed and said that Microsoft will be different in the cloud because of all the different pieces that they own and distinguished. Because they (SaaS) applications can offer software-as-a-service, and they can provide public and hybrid clouds. No one can offer a complete package. Things like AzureAD and Office365 is platform pieces are stuck together things to help provide a comprehensive solution. He also said that Microsoft's main APIs are not built in Azure, but Office365 Office365 and will be everywhere, are the most widely used productivity platform.

Gartner also asked about Microsoft and the Internet-of-Things (IoT), and that Microsoft seemed conspicuously absent here. Satya replied that the Internet of Things has a very open definition, and for Microsoft IoT is about endpoints that have an operating system that is manageable and have defined security policies for them. He mentioned 10 Windows can very much become a platform for the Internet of Things. Then there is also machine learning, predictive analytics, to manage and monitor all endpoints. This is a big part of the Azure.

I talk to Satya was very open and be honest. He recognized error and expressed very clear where he believes that Microsoft may result. In many ways, the vision he has expressed similar Citrix is centered innovations around mobile workspaces, sharing a mobile first, cloud first topic and to employee productivity. We always have a close partner of Microsoft, and we expect a close relationship will continue, as we tweak both our business models in a mobile first, cloud first world. The good news is that in his keynote Satya reiterated that the partners have a key to how Microsoft manages now will be, and going forward.

Oh, and there was one last question. Did he prefer the pioneers (in relation to the Portland Trail Blazers owned by Paul Allen) or the Clippers (with respect to the Los Angeles Clippers owned by Steve Ballmer). His answer: "Seahawks"
