The recent news that Kindred Healthcare and Gentiva merge health services in the largest post-acute providers in the US made me think about one of the most valuable (but least discussed) results of a centralized, virtualized approach to IT services - faster M & a integration. Why? Because Kindred exact history with Citrix divided in 2011
Every business executive and CIO knows that mergers and acquisitions are cumbersome and complexity at many levels - from the business negotiation employee onboarding. And the health sector "M & A-to-noise" is not likely to stop any time soon. Unfortunately for CIOs IT system integration is perceived one of the biggest obstacles, costs and timelines to assimilate to his newly acquired companies or merged.
But may be the exact opposite. This is Kindred (and many other healthcare provider is) "not so secret" secret :. Investment in infrastructure, which all your IT services allows immediately provision and de-provision anyone, anywhere, on any device
Here is why. IT teams need the employees of the newly acquired companies with access to the resources they need to be productive - on the first day. This is not an easy task when you see:
- Add and support of legacy and custom applications that can leave an acquired company to still
- Ensure that your corporate apps on any device, operate the acquired company must
- support a larger and increasingly employees based distributed - often before the increase for budget or staff and
- protect your critical data against threats that exist in the acquired company environment could be.
Therefore organizations like Kindred in Citrix invests technology years. They realized that IT services centralization could accelerate the time-to-value for M & A, making them new employees, bringing applications, systems and locations online in a matter of days rather than weeks or months.
When Kindred divided in 2011, her story, she confronts the task of integrating RehabCare, a $ 1.3 billion company with 37 hospitals in several states. When John pioneer, Senior Director of Technical Services stated in Kindred: "One of the challenges was to provide access to 22 financial applications available for around 25,000 new users on the first day we had limited access to their environment ahead of time, before we actually. owned, so we could not just go out and start installing systems. "Ultimately Kindred leveraged Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop new users to provide all the resources they needed from Adobe Acrobat to SAP, immediately after the start of the operational involvement of the Kindred.
Here's the kicker. The IT organization enables an important strategic need for their business, but they did it with an incredible degree of operational efficiency. In fact, only 4 Kindred employees and 3 contractors manage the entire environment.
Kindred is not alone in the effects of a centralized approach to realize IT services. And it's not just about M & A. Think of all the scenarios that this infrastructure strategy can affect. A health care system wants to build an urgent care footprint. A physician-owned practice group has business partners access to their data provide, as they form an accountable care organization (ACO). Or will a large IDN to offer clinical applications and desktops as a service to companies they do not own. The same investment in infrastructure can provide many real and measurable benefits for the company - quickly
approaches With the fall GONG Conference, the time for healthcare CIOs is to discuss now how effectively the impact of health to measure IT investments .. Instead ROI, perhaps healthcare CIOs should look at a metric that aligns more closely with patient care - results. Kindred history is a great example of how an IT investment can make a real strategic result. Business transformation
