Citrix XenServer Workload Balancing (WLB)

Citrix XenServer Workload Balancing (WLB) -

When I first started at Citrix, I have a lot of training with the XenServer Workload Balancing Architect Deane Smith. Deane has evolved from Citrix remains its architecture and it is one of the smartest and most thoughtful components Examples of product design that I've ever seen.

XenServer Workload Balancing (WLB) is one of the most disturbing examples of product names I saw. It sets the stage that this product in the first place, it goes automatically to workloads, which prefer many administrators balancing to do yourself. Also meant licensing that it was not always available was so often overlooked by XenApp and XenDesktop users.

The recent release of a new version of XenServer 6.5 and a new version of WLB adds more functionality to create a better user interface enhanced audit functionality and changes in the licensing, it relevant to more users on the XenServer platform including those with Citrix XenDesktop HDX and XenApp.

So what WLB do for you?

XenServer WLB has basically four layers; the top is that some icing on the cake, which is the ability of balancing workloads to automate; but the majority of its power and applications lies in the underlying three layers

The four layers (collection, analysis, warnings, load balancing) .:

layer 1 : Collection and archiving XenServer metrics with fine granularity; Alarm setting based on collected metrics;

  • XenCenter monitoring used RRDs that decrease in granularity over time; WLB provides the user the ability to maintain a controlled granularity Metrics - provides a free alternative to third party monitoring or director for users with a license. An administrator can come on Monday morning and see in fine granularity metrics with a crash on Friday linked. Or, an administrator can identify check average usage over the year spare capacity, while identifying the granularity keep peak load

layer 2 .: Historical development Analysis metrics; Metric reporting; Chargeback capability

  • WLB allows administrators to set system alerts by metric thresholds triggered and the analysis layer
  • reports that enable automatic capacity planning of system administrators
  • chargeback functionality

layer 3: alerts raised and positioning recommendations VM

  • WLB alerts administrators based on both thresholds and historical trend data alert user problems in their use of resources and also recommendations for VM migration for administrators

makes layer 4: Automated Workload balancing carried out based on recommendations of layer 3

  • administrators who configure react an implementation of the recommendations automatically and corrective actions to improve performance on an insert

, I always loved the architecture of this product and how each layer adds to a system administrator alone value. It is a product designed with the full understanding that system administrators day carers require purely administrative functionality not only day. System administrators today are in fact system capacity planning architect, manage budgets and staff, trouble-shooter and provide important insight guide. WLB provides administrators with an easy way, the reports Finance and exec management easy, Mark infrastructure resource constraints need to create, show, if the hardware at capacity, is to identify the bottlenecks where resource investment is especially needed, as where it TCO spare capacity to reduce.

I think one of the reasons, system administrators are so suspicious of automated load balancing, since many of the products that are not robust enough, and the recommendations primitive and often scaly. XenServer has several years had to get this right, and I have seen the code, seen in the production - this is one of the few load balancing products I actually recommend. So if you have a XenDesktop or XenApp Administrator are with WLB restarted as a result of the new license model, have a look at this - game go !!!

In my next blog, I am hoping some applications and gems in WLB, particularly suitable for the needs of HDX customers with XenApp and XenDesktop, so keep your eyes open to Mark. Update: New Blog is here! Read it here!

In the meantime, find out about the power of WLB

XenServer WLB has a fascinating and very readable administrator guide, they consider it here, packed out with real examples world. I strongly recommend to read this, as you will find applications that open your eyes to the power and the possibilities for administrators. You only need to read the index for system administrators to see the nuggets of joy - with issues such as (a tiny fraction below):

  • "3.2 Choosing the best host for a VM."
  • "3.3.2. understanding WLB recommendations under high Availability"
  • "4.1.2.1 batch usage analysis"
  • "4.1.2.7 pool Optimization History"
  • " 5.1.1.1. optimizing and Managing power automatically "
  • " 5.1.1.1.3. designing environments for power management and VM consolidation "

Enterprise Ready

WLB is now a mature enterprise-level feature of XenServer, with history (best part of a decade of development) has a long and proven. Much of its development over several years, callous behavior and recommendations, when a system is under load. This product comes into its own when you start the network, server and system to fight. It is easy to make a monitoring product that works on a healthy system if your network fails and metric collection begins an elastic product to fail to write takes a lot of thought and testing, which is what you now with WLB 6.5 have. WLB is, of course, designed to features such as high availability and dynamic memory allocation to work with all the other enterprise level XenServer.

WLB was established for XS6.2 during an extended team retired was the underlying architecture to reshape a lot of people thought he was gone, the development and improvements were actually in progress. This was part of a long-term plan to add this product to ensure is future-proof and hardened with the advanced scalability and requirements of the now released and re-architected XenServer 6.5 align. I think that confuses a lot of people, why was the product is temporarily unavailable, the technical requirements for a product are sometimes not so transparent and I think we did not send that it well (a, we have learned from). The enhanced architecture positioned now WLB as well suited to the scale in the VDI with XenDesktop and XenApp and cloud.

A few tips!

  • XenCenter shows just from WLB tab to configure when the XenServer pool licensed (Enterprise or any license type), this means that if the WLB tab is hidden, is the XenServer pool is not licensed. See
