Hyper-V 08 R2 Planning Guide for XenDesktop 5.6 - Now available -

A key advantage of XenDesktop is that it works with three of the most common virtualization products on the market today ' hui - Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere. However, each of these has a hypervisor architecture and different features. Since each XenDesktop design will vary depending on the selected Hypervisor, we created three separate planning guides

  • CTX134944: XenDesktop Planning Guide - Integration with Microsoft Hyper-V
  • CTX132110 planning Guide XenDesktop - integration with Citrix XenServer
  • CTX132166 planning Guide XenDesktop - integration with VMware vSphere

It has been a while since the first planning Guide XenDesktop for Hyper-V was released and we learned a lot of things right now. That's why Ed Duncan and I have just completed a complete rewrite of the Hyper-V Planning Guide (CTX134944) with the help of Alex Balcanquall, Michael Cooper, Tony Sanchez and Frank Anderson. In the new version, we have added and revised a number of key design decisions for Hyper-V, including :?

  1. What Hyper-V edition should I choose The advantages and disadvantages of each issue are discussed and recommendations are provided on the editing should be used to host XenApp servers, virtual desktops and infrastructure servers.
  2. How many physical networks do I need to join my hosts? providing details on typical physical demands networks for Hyper-V host that supports XenDesktop including recommendations on the separation of traffic and networks should be associated.
  3. What virtual machines to be hosted on a failover cluster? Guidance is given on the basis of whether virtual machines are infrastructure servers, workstations dedicated, workstations pooled or XenApp servers.
  4. Should I enable dynamic memory? The planning guide will explore the benefits to enable dynamic memory and to provide recommendations on how to optimize this technology.
  5. Should I use Provisioning Services (PVS) or Machine Creation Services (MCS) with Hyper-V? The Planning Guide also highlights important considerations when choosing between Provisioning Services or Machine Creation Services.

Sometimes it can be difficult to know which option to choose for each design decision. That is why we have included a table at the beginning of the document describing our recommended defaults for each decision. The recommendations will not be right in all situations, but it is a great place to start and you can refer to the relevant design decision sections for more information.

We have also provided high-level implementation of recommendations in the annex to help ensure that you have completed the work in the right order and do not miss a critical step. Where appropriate, we have also provided links to Citrix and Microsoft whitepapers / blog posts so you can dig deeper for more information
