Access Gateway Licensing Demystified Part 2 (HA) -

As a follow up to my previous post Access Gateway Licensing debunked, I want to add some details about license HA - High Availability. I received further issues around how licensing works with HA, and I hope to be able to answer those here.

Again, note that the access gateway discussed in this blog is the access gateway based on NetScaler, which is popularly known as Access Gateway Enterprise. Citrix recently announced the end of life for all Access Gateway platforms with non-base NetScaler, which makes then Enterprise Edition, the de-facto Access Gateway.

High Availability

HA on an Access Gateway appliance is essentially an active failover deployment / passive. In this deployment, receives an access gateway and manages connections, while a second access gateway monitors the first unit. If the first access gateway stops accepting connections for any reason, the second Access Gateway takes over and begins actively accepting connections. This configuration prevents downtime and ensures that the services provided by Access Gateway remain available, even if one Access Gateway does not support

HA Licensing

Licensing Access Gateway is always linked to the hostname of the appliance. To set up two appliances in an HA configuration, one of the main requirements is to assign the same host name to both devices. Once done, you can go to your "MyCitrix" account and allocate licenses (both platform and universal, if purchased) to this hostname. These can then be downloaded and applied to the Access Gateway devices. Note that the application of the same license on both devices is consistent with the Citrix EULA (End User License Agreement). Citrix EULA allows the same license to be installed on an unlimited number of devices, as long as the total number of concurrent connections across all devices in the configuration does not exceed the total number of licenses purchased. This works for our HA pair because, at any given time, only one of the devices will be active

Note :. If you need details about how the platform licenses and permits work on Universal Access Gateway, please refer to my previous post - Access Gateway licenses debunked

Scenario

Let's say you bought 100 CloudGateway business licenses, to provide secure electronic and secure browser capabilities to your mobile sales force. To provide remote access, you also buy two VPXs Access Gateway and configures to work in HA. With these purchases, receives you the following licenses:

  1. 100 licenses CloudGateway Enterprise
  2. 100 Access Gateway Universal licenses
  3. 2 AG licenses VPX Platform

as part of the HA configuration, lets say the hostname for both devices is configured as ag.abc.com '. The next step is for the client to go to his MyCitrix account, allocate 100 licenses and 1 Universal Platform license for 'ag.abc.com'. These are then downloaded and applied to both the Access Gateway VPXs. HA is your good to go.
