Personal vDisk v5.6.5 -

Last week, we announced a new version of Citrix Personal vDisk (PVD), the 5.6.5 release. This version of PVD contains a number of enhancements and improvements based on feedback from customers and partners gathered in recent quarters. We have focused our development efforts in this press around two key areas:

  • Improved usability
  • Improved performance

We improved usability by addressing some of the common concerns that we have received from our customers who have deployed PVD. Specifically, we improved the usability of PVD in v5.6.5 as follows:

  • Deleting the application letter PVD Training Area V: - now, PVD consumes a drive letter P: (default, can be changed during deployment PVD), instead of two. We heard from customers that end users do not always understand what the V: drive has been used for, and why its always reflected the contents of drive C :. The P: drive still continue to contain "profile" of the user's data (eg, the contents of C: users)
  • Setting Auto space between the application area and profile area - now, PVD automatically extend the application area (formerly V: drive as described above) using the unused space profile. The amount by which the application space has expanded, as well as thresholds to determine when the space will be expanded can be customized by the administrator. This allows end users to more easily use the entire PVD space allocated to them by their administrator, without having to resort to a manual disk resizing or user manual configuration. Visit PVD 5.6.5 documentation for information on configuring these settings.

We also listened to customers who have been affected by the reduction in density VM imposed by PVD (as measured by tests LoginVSI) in XenDesktop 5.6. The new version of this PVD reduced to ~ 20-25% to 11-14% overload for Windows 7 desktops, an improvement of 44%. This improvement was achieved by optimizing the file system filter driver of PVD (a similar optimization was performed in the Plugin filter driver Citrix App Streaming / offline to obtain comparable results - see our entry previous blog for more details on this improvement more detail). Another advantage of the optimization we have done in the new version of PVD results in improved compatibility of applications, especially when interacting with other file system filter drivers.

PVD existing deployments will be automatically upgraded to the new version of PVD when the base image the software is updated. This update will happen automatically when you first start the VM catalog and requires no end-user interaction or administrator

We encourage you to try this new version of PVD -. Our teams of development and testing have a lot of work in what is the best version yet of PVD, and we are delighted to see made available.
