Another great year at EDUCAUSE
I love the opportunity with educational leaders to connect! -Hearing The successes, challenges and opportunities from different schools in the world, and this year I noticed certainly a change. During 2012 and 2013, there was a rush to the schools on many levels technology to become more innovative, curriculum, programs. It was a fantastic nudge in the right direction. The schools were new learning platforms always creative, touch-screen technology, tablets for students, Gamification, 3D printing technology was on a roll! Here we are reviewing 2014, how to support, secure and teach with the newly introduced technologies. While the buzz around innovation will continue to grow, Education IT to begin to raise, on what aspects of the technology are the most important to improve the learning experience for students.
Here the top 5 trends I have noticed at EDUCAUSE 2014
1. It's all about the apps . VDI has now the hype for a few years, but also how far VDI has come, it can not be solved on campus for every application. Education IT sets the focus back to the application, and with the goal of accessibility and performance for students to improve faculty and staff. IT needs a flexible solution that they provide for any application Windows, Mobile, SaaS, Web or desktop PC, on any device, over any network, to the preserve the school to the licensing and laboratory costs and free student before allowing will buy expensive equipment or software.
2. devices present challenges instead of innovation. Many schools implemented tablets, thin clients, 3D printer, etc., to the latest technology to their students-that offer fantastic, but without the proper back-end infrastructure is the support and provision of services for these devices, they are not providing the value or innovation, which they are intended. Have tablets, the right choice? Maybe they really need keyboards. How do I keep them safe? How can I, without losing power supply AutoCAD my Thin Client?
3. Learning environments need a redesign. start schools that computer laboratories to detect filled with rows of computers that are not working for the students of today. As we have already discussed, the students have three or more mobile devices already, they just need to all work together to access resources and a room with other students. Many schools have been declining now or completely open use to eliminate labs and turn them into Google esq or café-like spaces with creative learning areas and large monitors where students bring their own equipment and work together.
4. Campus expansion to more students to achieve . We see schools try to expand in many forms and fashions. There is no "typical" students, so it has to get creative and achieve the best method to find students on an individual level. Some schools do open better to achieve this by remote campus locations students. Other increases the number of online class seats available. Both options increase the availability of learning for students, but only if the tools and resources needed to coursework available to complete them anywhere, on any device. Online and distance students need access to applications, desktops, data and collaboration tools to be successful and they feel more connected to help their colleagues, professors and school.
5. How can I happen? The good news for IT is that they know solutions for their challenges are, but they are not always clear how to make it happen, or what is the best option-there are endless possibilities for any challenge, you are facing today. It's overwhelming. It is as if you try to cross an ocean, but you do not know how to build a boat, or a boat works. All you know how to do, swimming, and something really big you will probably eat before you make it to the other side. You have a raft, that's a start, but that will not get there either.
