Octoblu: Recap of SXSW Intel Devtech Mixer -

At the beginning of this year as part of the Intel Software Innovators program, Intel IoT wondered Octoblu demos for SXSW event.

As you may or may not know, SXSW satellite events and parties are becoming more prominent, to build compared to the actual disk. So we decided from all and revive an ancient art installation, which was perfect for a party. The place called Fractured Future was rebuilt with Intel Edison and Octoblu!

This is one of the most ambitious projects I have done in such a short time (just two weeks!)

luckily I had some help from some fantastic colleagues, Connor Coffman and Shilpika Chowdhury, without which it would not have been possible, ready to have this project. The original Fractured Future was a collaboration with Connor Coffman, April Surrency and Althea Pergakis.

This new version of Fractured Future is a crosslinked feat that contains light, space and geometry showing the power Octoblu and the Intel Edison platform in a fun creative way.

There are six infinity pyramids, basically like an infinity mirror, but as a pyramid with addressable LEDs that can be controlled by an alien-like futuristic interface. I designed the pyramids and the control console from scratch and made the pieces in HeatSync Labs, a Hacker Space in Downtown Mesa (AZ).

Using Stewart Christie, the Intel IoT community managers who have made this possible, Shilpika and Connor, we all assembled in time for the event. Each of the pyramids has an Intel Edison, Fade Candy LED driver and a battery hidden under a false bottom mirror. They are all connected independently by Octoblu and can be displayed on the console are controlled and animated below. To change that you control pyramid, set another rune in the middle (of each RFID tag has inwardly).

The console itself has an Intel Edison is inside, the forwarding of all sensor data (the motorized fader) and the RFID tag IDs Octoblu. All main logic in a single Octoblu river run in the cloud built. I also built a small website with sliders that allow you to control the pyramids and the physical motorized faders on the console would shadow what you are doing. All this happens in real time via Octoblu.

The event was a lot of fun, and we are very grateful to everyone at Intel who helped pass this cooperation.

Special thanks to Bob Duffy from Intel! We were very happy to see all at the event, the fun around with these pyramids (they are wireless, all after) and seeing the excitement around the technology by all participants, volunteers and other developers!

some other really big projects on the Intel Devtech Mixer There was and you can learn more here!
