At the Adobe Summit earlier this year I have a speaker, listening to tell the crowd: "We are all in generally agree we do not, that the navigation is dead? "that is, that the search is everything, and faceted search equal to the entire navigation you need.
It is a common refrain in these days. I am willing to concede that the navigation waning importance in light of the robust search technology and better and better SEO. But after a summer of survey and monitoring customer information to work with product documentation, I believe, good navigation is to seek an important and supportive partner; at least for a little while yet.
The Citrix information Experience Team re-design the product documentation experience, and we are not efforts Navigation throw to improve. We have learned a lot lately:
- We surveyed 10 eDocs user and led more than 50 in-depth interviews better our visitors to understand
- We observed two large buckets that users. a typical pattern tend to fall
- We observed. users can share their information Holiday with a Google.com search start, then refine into and through navigation zero. And depending on whether they know exactly what they are looking, they behave differently
Our research shows that use of the users, what they provided. Search and navigation. I call this group the seeker and the hunters. Interestingly, you will most people say that they prefer, or one above the other using one of these methods, but observation shows that they usually use a combination.
Seekers
Seekers want to solve a particular problem. They are often in crisis, in a hurry, perhaps even desperate. You go on the road mountain sage and ask their question. Heart pounding, you are looking for the only true answer. Seekers are a reliable and consistent amount. (They are also the majority of our users.) Sometimes, however, they give more credence to the answers they are passed because they believe in the way
Seekers have questions like :.
- What are the new features?
- Has our receivers version of the new iOS version?
- which database is supported?
- Why are so many sessions will be blocked? [1945005unterstützen]
- Can I get a site to my storefront?
the manner of our time add, Google.com is. If impatient (or, if the answer is not in the first 4 search results), they let you down, disappointed.
Our Seeker customers require excellent search engine technology. If they choose the local search box, it has to be as good as Google.com. They deserve and expect nothing less.
Hunters
Hunters understanding want. You learned tracking capabilities. You need information Food - before an entire meal of information or for the winter. You have to pause, look or sniff, pick out some evidence enough stamina, and follow a track (if it is not too long). You get less rapidly than the viewfinder frustrated. You could not have a single simple question, but are often looking for broader information. You want the book, the report, an overview - a swath of information. They have a whole range of issues. They could even cancel the way an interesting guide to follow. You are not in an emergency. They are stalkers at heart and sometimes a good hunt or romp in the desert enjoying
Hunters Questions such as :.
- Our application is 5 years old - should we move to the newer version
- use Citrix at my new job, so I have to their implementation
- How many products can I Mobile Device management must add, to study [1945005?]
- can I application management in the cloud move
- My CIO does not understand what can do a Citrix solution - I its must prepare a report and explain
- Does our Citrix implementation of standards for this new government contract we meet to go?
our hunters customers need excellent site navigation they understand to help the country to get their bearings, and to pursue understanding. They benefit from a good navigation, context and discovery. Also tend finder navigation and context to use, after an initial Google.com you are looking for in Citrix.com aims. Especially if they are unsure of the terminology or specific information that you are looking for.
Google.com is difficult to match
customers are clamoring for a better enterprise search. A major challenge is that it is surprisingly difficult finding local sites to develop, which is as good as Google.com. It is hard to beat, good, fit, all these PhD think-tankers at Google who do nothing but refine and refine their algorithms in the world-class best of breed search. There is no problem with customers Google.com as their primary entry point to use in our product documentation - it is very wise to do so. There are several projects with Citrix to study this issue and we will succeed.
, if we have local search in Citrix information pages and Google.com work, we can begin to rely less on navigation systems. But until then we need to provide robust navigation available, and keep testing whether navigating the user benefits.
Plenty of room for good Navigation
Until users are looking for anything they want to see alone, navigation is not dead. And our research shows that customers still use and need.
Add Citrix IX we have not removed the navigation of our redesign project. We make sure our navigation strategies help fill gaps. We painted by great navigation to provide rich contextual stories for user dedicated. If there is a breeze for the enterprise web search is to match what Google.com does, we will reconsider. We want to take care of the viewfinder and hunters alike.
I'd love to hear what you think!
