Welcome to the receiver X1 -

Welcome to the Receiver X1 Tech Preview! This is to explain the first of a series of blogs, what is X1, and in particular, how to customize it.

Before I begin, a little about me long ago Citrix. I entered. I was part of the team that first came up with the idea of Web-based access to Windows applications. While I can not take part in large claim "Project Charlotte:" I have been around long enough to the depth and breadth of the issues of customers who "only" want to understand met, to let their users get in their applications.

roles to a few years ago I was the inventor and then to perform "project Anthem." This project introduced the idea of an enterprise app store. This was referred to as "Dazzle" before they merge with other projects and always "Receiver". This, apart from a few coats of paint and a bucket load of extra features, the standard was in accessing Citrix technology.

That is, until now!

choosing the introduction UI

moving into Mobile Devices

The other major change in the move to been mobile devices. Mobile applications provide a new delivery model, and a whole new set of expectations. We forked our customers - WorxHome for XenMobile and receiver for XenDesktop. This was a difficult decision, but a necessary

The alternative -. to force all our XenDesktop customers to ride the bumps of early forages in mobile app and device management - was not a risk we were willing to accept. The good news is that we evolved from those early days, and now is the time WorxHome to get back into the receiver (X1) fold

Mobile applications another challenge Mark - .. The management of updates By public app stores, IT is from the loop. If an app manufacturers their app updates each user receives it. Day zero. This raises major challenge for enterprise IT support. Like any other app providers we were caught in the trap. Update add our UX functions and so our app feel fresh - or stick with the old to avoid that our conservative customers to disrupt

X1 architecture
[

X1 is a new approach to combat all these issues

, it is not a panacea - but it makes it clear, change the game. The first key concept with X1 is that the UX lives on a server, your server, and you decide when, and if it changes. Citrix will release any new versions of the client - to fix bugs and add features - but when it comes to the core of the user interface, you will be responsible

The second feature of the first follows .. Now that the UI server delivered, we can achieve the degree of agreement between different platforms that we dreamed and deliver pursuit of

Finally, and most importantly -. At least for this blog series - we the user interface to better meet customer needs can "tweak". This means that the customer logo and color schemes - but also deeper changes as click-through dialogues or news of the day; Integration with back-end systems permit or links to your service status dashboards.

What is to ensure that certain applications are hidden, highlighted or float on the top of search results? All these things are possible, and many remarkably simple. The best news is that these changes will apply to all platforms, not just on the net.

We have developed a set of APIs designed to allow these adjustments. We have learned, via the web interface, how useful it is to access "deep" APIs - but we have also learned the cost of informal changes - with customers unable to make their changes to the front over Publications to take. develop with X1 adaptation API is baked from the start and we hope that this will enable both end users and system integrators to achieve what they want from X1, and carry it forward as X1, storefront and XenMobile.

This blog series to learn the first stop on X1 adaptation. Over the next few blogs that I go to give an insight into the APIs, and its limits, and ask for feedback on how we can add more. But what does not let us first level on what is in the Tech Preview, and.

The Tech Preview

So what is, and is not in the Tech Preview? On the one hand this is a Tech Preview of storefront that XenDesktop component that the X1 UI hosts. (XenMobile will host the identical user interface in later versions, but that's not part of this tech preview). For this Tech Preview is the X1 UI only available for web browsers, but in time the same UI - and the exact web site - will be delivered to all our receivers X1 customers - Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and Chrome OS.

you can use to build the Tech Preview to understand and are used to the X1-UI, and to experiment with the adaptation and branding. It is not for production use (of course) determined and there will be changes before release - partly add features that are not in the Tech Preview and partly bugs and scrub address areas where more work is needed. The other expectation we have is to make changes as a result of feedback (so please give some!). Everything you do, adjust the UX or a trademark for all native X1 Receiver flavors are covered as they are made available -. But remember that this is a Tech Preview and some things is Change

Getting Started

  1. providing a shop!
This is a regular storefront installer, and installation is just like any other version of storefront. However for the Tech Preview, there is no upgrade support. Start with a new machine - or if the installation on an existing machine, first uninstall (and it is often a good idea to check C: inetpub wwwroot citrix is really empty before the new installation to install). The next blog will go through this step by step.
  2. providing a storage
Each transaction is by default have a Receiver for Web site, and you can create additional sites if you wish. This is where the X1 UI lives. X1 is essentially a reskin of Receiver for Web, and actually lives next to the old green bubble UI. You can even switch between the two in the Admin console - and under the covers this simply changes the Loading
  3. Try it out
    Open the URL in a browser .. It's X1!

What do you get?

The new interface has a number of elements, and this is a quick walkthrough. Note: There are two versions of the user interface -. For browsers on large screens (desktops / tablets) and small screens (phones)

  • Client Detection Pages

This is traditionally UX, to determine whether a native receiver is installed, which is then used for HDX starts. Note: This is part of the UI applies only to pure web clients, and there is also support for the pure HTML5 HDX Engine.

  • Authentication Pages
Again, only in the context of web clients, and only if you do not NetScaler Gateway SSO. These have a new skin, but have the ceiling all the same features as the previous iteration of the Receiver for Web.
  • The main UI, divided into
    • Favorites
These are apps has selected the user (selected for them or had). If you do not want this feature, it can by disabling Subscription off will storefront.
    • Desktops
The set of desktops for the user published. only displayed if the user has some!
    • Apps
all applications the user has access.

The "Apps" page is the key and has three or four views of its own. In each of these views, the user has the option to use the "Add" (if favorite is enabled) to "open" it, or to see more details. (In the future, the position / open will add and other actions from the detail view.)

are the partial views as follows

  • All Apps
A simple alphabetical list of every app ,
  • folder
A traditional folder (or if you prefer, "category") hierarchy with applications in each folder. Homage to Web Interface.
  • search
search apps name, description, or a folder.
  • Special app groups
These are new. The administrator can select collections of applications for any purpose, and these are highlighted on the main page. Popular App groups are defined in storefront on the Admin Console and can be based on application name, keywords or categories.

Make It Mine!

This blog series will go in depth both visual and functional interface customization, but here for today is a tough nut. You can download the storefront Admin UI, and select a company logo on the main UI highlights to load and go color. Among the covers creates a Web-style (CSS) file to the UI on the fly rebranding. Something like this:

Example of a simple X1-branding

In upcoming blogs we will use CSS to add based deeper changes to the interface, along with JavaScript functional changes specifically created for this purpose to the new X1 extension APIs. For now, download it and try it out
