Configuring Applications for XenDesktop Single Server Scalability tests Login VSI: Part 1- Preparing Applications -

Test Preparation Application Server Single By working with our partners Citrix Alliance hardware such as Cisco, Dell, HP and IBM, our goal is always to provide a set of test results that will allow potential customers to understand how a set of commonly used programs run and perform in a Citrix environment. These results can help in the process of decision making and architecture, and help determine the hardware and software limitations, breakpoints, and soft spots. These types of results may also be useful for Citrix XenDesktop assessment bodies with their own applications and infrastructure.

single test server scalability is key to our approach. the results of the single-server scalability tests correctly configured are often used as reference for assessing how a multi-test for large-scale server scalability will occur. Throughout this process, it is essential to ensure that the required applications are not only installed correctly, but are able to run without problems.

The process begins with a list of applications and workloads that describes how applications are generally used. However, it is extremely difficult and time consuming to evaluate a user interacting eight hours a day for five days a week to register and create an appropriate workload script. To help automate this process, Citrix uses automation tools of the workload, such as Login VSI (http://www.loginvsi.com). When using Login VSI, a standard set of applications are predefined for certain workloads, allowing testers to easily evaluate scalability. The most commonly used applications and plug-ins are Microsoft Office 07/2010, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash.

Microsoft Office applications are often virtualized with Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop architecture, and will be the focus in this first part of the article. When using Microsoft Office applications and plug-ins in a scalability test environment, there are many elements that need to be modified and optimized. When using Citrix XenDesktop with Citrix Provisioning Server, applications must be tested before converting your main image to a virtual disk. This blog will talk about installation options, application settings, and items to check when performing a single test server scalability for use with Citrix XenDesktop, Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise, and the VSI ID.

Installing an appropriate version of Microsoft Office 07 and 2010
Microsoft Office 07 and 2010 can be installed by a variety of methods, being the most common traditional package format MSI package and App-V. However, when testing with Citrix XenDesktop, it is recommended to use Microsoft Office 07/2010 subscription Multiple Activation Key (MAK), Microsoft Key Management Server (KMS), or Microsoft Development Network (MSDN). Commercial versions of Microsoft Office are not supported for this purpose by Microsoft or Citrix. The tips below can help you save time before you install and test Microsoft Office.

  • Check ISO file filename . Whether the installation of Microsoft Office 07 or 2010 applications using an ISO image, pay extra attention to the ISO file name as it will provide a clear indication of the type of installation of Microsoft Office. For example, the second entry below shows a Volume License (VL), while the former does not:
  • en_office_standard_07_united_states_x86_cd_483881.iso
  • en_office_professional_plus_2010_with_sp1_ vl _x86_dvd.iso (indicates Volume License)
  • Mount ISO image and examine the installation disc . In case the file names for packages or ISO files have been changed, the folder structure can be explored before installation to determine if the distribution is not a retail volume. The images below show an example for Office 2010 to help determine via Windows Explorer if the support is mounted a VL or not. Step by step instructions for this verification process can be found at the following link.http: //support.microsoft.com/kb/931401

please refer to the Microsoft article below for more information on Microsoft office licenses. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828378. Once the correct support of Microsoft Office installation is checked, the installation can begin. Install the latest Microsoft Office service pack is also good practice for Microsoft, Citrix, and Login VSI.

Access to Microsoft Office licenses with limited Internet connectivity In some situations, the system under test may not have appropriate Internet connectivity for Microsoft office 2010 activation, or it may not be able to communicate with an appropriate KMS host. This can be challenging if you plan to test longer than the period of activation by 25 days for Microsoft Office 2010. Several options can be used to work around the activation related situations.

  • Option 1. Configure your own KMS server for testing . without access to enterprise KMS server labs can configure their own server for testing purposes. Access to key KMS business is highly desirable for this process. A step by step video on how to set up a KMS server is displayed at the following address: http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/setting-up-a-windows-kms-host/10tg0u61y ? cpkey = 0c1a5986-4243-436f-8c40-8b2c49aa0670% 7c% 7c% 7c% 7c

Furthermore, the following link provides information on Windows 7 build in a lab environment with KMS http: //support.citrix.com/article/CTX124106 If you are able to use a KMS server in your lab, you can also change your vDisk for KMS as described in this article about configuring KMS with Microsoft office 2010 for different scenarios. http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX128276

  • Option 2. Use Microsoft Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT 2.0). Microsoft VAMT is a useful tool that allows administrators to activate Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows clients from a console, even when these systems without access to the Internet. This tool is also useful with Citrix XenDesktop in a test case for confirming KMS activation in a large laboratory frame can be a challenge for Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. Microsoft VAMT can also save your product keys, activate via online or by proxy, a state license activation request information, and save your confirmation ID. If your lab servers or virtual machines Hypervisors not have Internet connectivity, but a machine does have an Internet connectivity using the proxy activation can save time, allowing you to apply saved virtual machine confirmation ID specific. More information about using Microsoft VAMT and a step by step process can be found at the following address. http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/using-vamt-2-0/10tkzhtlq?cpkey=0c1a5986-4243-436f-8c40-8b2c49aa0670%7c%7c%7c%7c
  • Option 3. Re-arm Microsoft Windows activation Grace Period . If necessary, the period of activation through Microsoft Windows can be extended or reset . A simple reset, your image and vDisk master server is an option to extend the period of activation grace if you plan to test more than 25 days and not have internet access, no options for KMS and can not use VAMT. The period 2010 Microsoft Office can be reset by a maximum of five times and Microsoft Windows 7 can be reset to a maximum of three times. More information on reset can be found in the following Microsoft. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee624357.aspx

Note that it is important to rearm Microsoft Office before re-arming Windows 7 as mentioned in the following the blog entry. http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2011/06/15/deploying-volume-activation-for-office-2010.aspx

Applications and Microsoft Office Test delete messages After Microsoft office is installed and enabled on the vDisk, it's time to test individual applications of the master VM console. To save time during any automated testing Login VSI, it is recommended to ensure that all Microsoft Office applications launch successfully. Ideally, the following tips should be followed before performing server conversion process image or Provisioning:

  • Office 2010 Suppress recommended settings dialog . If the Microsoft Windows 7 virtual machines are connected to the Internet, then it is likely that a dialogue settings appears when testing the first Microsoft Office application. If the systems are not connected to the Internet, the dialog box may not appear. In both cases, this Group Policy administrative template will ensure that this message does not appear while you are the critical test period. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=18968
  • Launching each Microsoft Office application as a user other than the domain administrator . simply assuming that applications launch correctly without testing can be very problematic when running scalability tests for hundreds of thousands of users, which could lose a lot of time. Test each application from the VM console confirms how each application running and checks whether it will launch successfully. Make sure you can manually use Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook no extra pops up or application crashes.
