In recent years, XenServer competitors have presented several arguments against using XenServer and arguments often center around a feature that they did not want 't.

A perfect example is the question of ROI virtualization and shared memory. VMware was often ready to present that vSphere had better return on investment due to their ability to balloon, the share and swap memory. Despite the methodological problems of these reports, it was just an argument when XenServer has not had the opportunity to manage the guest VM memory. However, when we presented our bloated memory solution, the dynamic memory control, the focus was away from the memory as the key factor in the return on investment, and storage live migration has become the new focal point .

There are of course a number of scenarios fairly common where migrating a drive from a storage solution to another meaning of the brand, and before XenServer 6.1, it was quite easy to meet these requirements; as long as you do not mind turning the virtual machine first.

The interesting thing is that when you speak highly available applications, assuming those applications are deployed by best practices, they constantly run with an offline node; but administrators were reluctant to commit downtime. The number of arguments as to why live storage migration was a genuine requirement does impress me, but when you think about it it was an effective marketing effort that creates a need to match the capabilities of a function .

With XenServer 6.1, we too have addressed the same need storage migration live, but also recognized a key component of virtualization today; Successful data centers are not bound by arbitrary cluster sizes longer. Successful data center consolidation choose a size that makes sense for the types of hosted workloads, and if you really need to live migration, you are by definition going to need live migration between clusters. With Storage XenMotion in XenServer 6.1, which was one of the first design requirements. This means that if you have resource pools with a single server, or resource pools with only local storage, or hundreds of resource pools of storage XenMotion was designed with you in mind.

Of course, live migration of virtual machines still did not address the most traditional event company use such as replacing aging storage arrays or addressing a LUN was short on space. In these models, the VM will remain stationary, but the underlying drive is the piece that moves. Fortunately by addressing a fundamental requirement of large scale data centers and cloud providers first, we have also created a solution that is perfectly suited to meet the operational needs of storage management in data centers of business.

If you want to see in action Storage XenMotion, please take a look at this short video series I recorded that covers three scenarios for common use. Better yet, if you want to make XenMotion storage experience for yourself, download a copy of XenServer and then start a free trial XenServer Advanced Edition. If you are looking for a little light reading on the subject, please please a look at this summary. With nearly one million downloads XenServer under our belt, we see that when he wants to balance functionality with a cost; XenServer is their clear choice and Storage XenMotion this choice just got a little easier.
