Dublin Bay Power Plant (DB) has deployed a Citrix environment cloud services to help support its IT infrastructure more and more - ultimately enabling staff to work more efficiently and flexibly, creating a greener iT environment and reduce total savings of hardware costs over a ten year period of about 82 hundred.
DB is a gas turbine plant combined cycle 400 megawatt located in Ringsend, a suburb of Dublin. It is maintained by the utility Operations & Maintenance Services (UOM), part of the international company growing energy ESB International.
DB provides up to 9% of the electricity produced in Ireland and has a relatively lean team of employees on -site who need reliable tools in place to enable them to be very productive and respond quickly to any situation that may disrupt service. By deploying Citrix technology, the goal of DB pension plans was to create a streamlined, cost-effective, flexible IT infrastructure which eventually allow its employees to be more efficient with the ability to work from anywhere, while in the same time improving the performance of critical applications and significantly reduce management and hardware costs
Designed and implemented by Unity Technology Solutions, Citrix advisor Solutions Now, the new infrastructure is powered by Citrix cloud services technologies, including Citrix XenDesktop and XenServer, creating a more agile and cost-effective iT environment. - Former "fat client" PC have been replaced by thin clients and virtual desktops powered by XenDesktop and Wyse terminals. Citrix NetScaler Branch Repeaterwas installed to increase the speed of access to applications across different sites. Under the project, the server of the estate of DB has also been strengthened significantly through server virtualization. Ultimately, DB can now offer virtual desktops and applications improved at all 41 employees, providing more flexible and productive working capacity.
The critical Citrix deployment benefits DB has already delivered. Employees can now access desktops and applications from anywhere, via any device - and to answer questions such as the possible plant trip, fumble or stopping quickly via iPhones or iPads - provide immediate support and avoiding unnecessary disruption.
In addition, operating costs have been reduced significantly: the total savings in material costs over a period of ten years will be in the region of 82 percent. The projections of the company also showed more than 0 percent savings in energy consumption, resulting in lower operating costs and play a significant role in the implementation of green IT strategy. In addition to supporting business continuity and recovery procedures after critical loss of the plant, the new infrastructure is agile enough to support the new company business initiatives, especially a green IT policy across the company to significantly reduce overall energy consumption of office.
Citrix, in collaboration with Unity Technology Solutions and Wyse Technology is pleased to be part of this success and is pleased to support DB's ongoing business objectives and work flexibility.
