Thats right, Simon Personal Communicator was originally developed by IBM in 1992 and marketed in collaboration with Bellsouth. Simon was the first device to combine cell phone and PDA with data access, the definition recognized in the industry for a SmartPhone. In fact, Simon had email, mobile applications, touch screen with virtual keyboard and even treated faxes! of course, there was a price to pay in excess of $ 899, the device also weighed in 18 oz and the battery only lasted a few hours. Simon was clearly ahead of his time, but as some may recall won Comdex Best of Show in 1993. Still hard to believe that it was developed 20 years ago. It would be interesting to imagine how history would have proceeded if IBM had not dropped the next generation of development Simon.
.
In the same Comdex event the Apple Newton was displayed behind the glass and John Sculley was evangelized the tablet as having the potential to transform the company. Tech History loves to Sculley as a villain who fired Steve Jobs. But it is not often noted that it was also the one who taught the importance and Steve phycology customer experience and brilliant marketing (remember the Pepsi campaign experience that rivaled Coke). Beyond what he did the original joint venture that started ARM, coined the term PDA, developed the Knowledge Navigator vision with Allan Kay and contributed to develop the business of apples $ 800 million when he joined to $ 8 billion when he left. In hindsight, perhaps it is not a bad thing that Steve left Apple, became angry, grew up, and returned with vengeance that changed the world.
.
Motorola, the original developer of the cell phone was originally working at Simon provide radio components, but recognized the threat to allow IBM as a potential competitor and changed strategy . They also looked at the Newton launch with great interest and started a working group to address the challenge that led to many advances in space.

If you find that little of the history of technology is interesting, you may want to join us next week at the South Florida Technology Alliance event at the headquarters of 9/25 global Citrix in Fort Lauderdale.

.
The event will include a panel discussion that I feel honored to moderate. Jerry Merkill the IBMer that originally proposed the Simon talk about how he sold the concept and got the management buy-in. John Sculley will speak about the Knowledge Navigator vision that also included features such as hyperlinking before the band was born. Jamie Borras was part of Motorola working group and went on technologies develop as PushToTalk. The discussion will also forward looking, including predictions regarding the next phase of mobility. Scott Moody founder Authentec biometric company that Apple has acquired also give us his vision of the future (but it may have to kill us if he reveals that Apple is doing the next ...)
.
during the event, we will also give demonstrations of locally developed applications like Citrix Receiver who won best application for Enterprise 2012 Mobile World Congress. In addition, the top 3 Mobile Startups in the South Florida will be present and showing how they plan to make history in the world of mobility.
.
Join us if you can Tuesday 9/25, otherwise we do not expect to save the event. For a taste of the discussion, you can consult the latest year marking the anniversary event 30 years of the PC which included technology legend stories discussed for the first time on stage .
