Project Avalon Self-service: on-demand applications, desktops and data - the future of user-centric IT -

Today's announcements around Avalon Project at Citrix Synergy Barcelona are a continuation of the momentum that began with demos Joe Vaccaro and I lead during the day 2 of honor at Synergy San Francisco earlier this year. Following this early sneak peek at Avalon internal Code, we are announcing today that the Avalon project will be delivered in two phases - Project Excalibur and Merlin; each with its own exciting Tech Preview.

Central to Project Avalon is self-service user provisioning (IT administration assigning users to IT services) which drives the underlying layers of the stack including Avalon Orchestration, XenDesktop / XenApp and CloudPlatform orchestration layer (CloudStack) VM. Our Citrix Service Provider (CSP) partners have resorted to self-service tools and techniques in the form of Citrix CloudPortal Services Manager for a couple of years now. They know the power of a portal or "Control Panel", which allows users to their different pension tenants in a self-service mode, with app services, office and data are hosted by the CSP. With this, the essential self-service technology, DSP should not worry daily adds / mods / remove users or adding IT services they need, because they relieve these previously manual and tedious tasks (that do not require their level of expertise) for "sub-administrators" found on the customer site. the sub-administrators are created by the CSP and they have only the rights that have been assigned. they have the opportunity add or remove users associated with their organization as well as the ability to add or delete a service to which they have access, on behalf of their users. Security and confidentiality are preserved as clients have no visibility on users other tenants or services they disagreed. they also have no idea (they should not care) how iT services are actually instantiated, provisioned or managed and maintained by the CSP. This arrangement is ideal for administrators CSP because they are not to worry about simple tasks daily that are off-l0aded and they are free to devote most of their time to the task of the missionary review of the implementation of cloud infrastructure underlying and maintaining SLAs. The self-service layer CloudPortal also doubles as an interface for the service providers themselves to be able to manage tenants and users initially on board for tenants who have recently signed on their services. This portal DSP to manage the services they provide in a segregation, multi-tenant mode and it allows them to track use to generate billing statements for tenants.

This is applicable to all businesses as well!

So, if you are a corporate customer? Does all this demand? And why are you reading this blog? Do not worry! Do not waste your time! One of the main objectives of the Avalon project is to provide this level of self-service and multi-tenancy at the Enterprise customer. For guests of the company to build real desktop and application of cloud, Citrix is working to expand CloudPortal Services Manager to manage all FlexCast models to drive the App and Desktop Orchestration layer to create the right kind of application or desktop platform for the particular use case. For the corporate customer, each tenant is a department or geographical region that will be activated with self service capabilities described above. The cards CSP admin on "Central IT" admin who heads the office of the cloud infrastructure and application and ensure SLAs are met between Central and IT services they serve. Even the measurement and reporting of usage capabilities applicable to organizations who wish to bill-back departments for the IT services they offer.

The end of Avalon game project is to enable customers of all types, CSP or Enterprise, which leverage the self-service capabilities CloudPortal, to off load to the end user provisioning / de provisioning to tenants or departments. The self-service layer will route a service request through an integrated workflow that will allow the approval of the application by the senior management or central IT. Once approved, the self-service layer will request the creation of the orchestration layer services. Orchestration will then automatically anything to add / remove users to create new XenApp or XenDesktop farms to websites, for example, responding to a request for thousands of new jobs. All this without any knowledge of "how" the Deputy Director and automatically generated from bare metal VM layer all the way up to applications, desktops and data services. Sounds complicated and difficult, but that's the beauty of Avalon system -. All this occurs independently and on demand on the basis of demand self-service

Project Avalon really inaugurates a new era for Citrix and our customers. As we move to the delivery and management of real desktop and app cloud, self-service will be a key element that allows your internal customers to consume IT services you provide.
