Citrix Universal Print Server (UPS) - What has changed in 2014 and what is expected to forward -
UPS session at # CitrixTex2014 - so much interest that we got the main stage!

Sometimes a product manager to see a technology that either as cutting or essential that you add it to your portfolio. I joined the Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, HDX Product Management Team as Product Manager for "HDX Graphics" to my area on the GPU-accelerated projects I expand the integration of NVIDIA vgpu on such work had and enables GPU adoption in OpenStack, Intel GVT with XenServer. As soon as I stepped discovered a few products that I wanted! Citrix Universal Print Server (UPS) and Citrix Universal Print Driver (UPD). My title has now changed to "product manager HDX and peripherals" that a pressure medium, USB Client Drive Mapping and a lot of fun things like haptic devices (eg Connexion 3D space mouse and virtual reality headsets!).

The pressure is more important

UPS and UPD functionality offer that is both fundamental and important, but these technologies are cutting edge and no other VDI solution matches what we this by integrating in HDX (see here) do.

  • As my colleague wrote in an e-mail, reassuring after he learned of my new enthusiasm " think about it: do you have published applications and desktops, what to do next Your users ? you start with them, carrying out day to day tasks similar to traditional desktops ... such as printing, for example. Ubiquitous as it may seem, pressure is one of the most demanding and critical part of the virtual desktop strategy "

is Why virtualize a complex problem when printing?

printers are notorious for their diversity, a simple task by an order of magnitude in the whimsical variety of hardware drivers, or the way can inflate before it is printed. If the virtual desktop and the local printer are separated by WAN, is that the thing does not help. Citrix has gone with its customers through this pain, and we Phaser write launched project back in 2011, the rules of the virtual printing new. The result was a set of technologies that shape not only end user printing experience easy and enjoyable, but also optimize print jobs and make the administrative task of printer management efficiency.

For an overview of UPS and UPD make, you should have the "Citrix Virtual Desktop manual" check-out, which has a whole chapter on solutions and use.

For recent months, the technology hardships we have on the next generation of UPS / UPD projects work, and improve the scalability and WAN performance. Plus some great new user interface and documentation is on the way!

A Steep Personal Learning Curve

While vgpu an easy transition project for me was working as a new project manager on the product as an engineer, UPS and UPD have been a new challenge and it's nice that resource to have been given and remit our printing solution to the next level to take. As is often the case with a version 1.0 product had the first version of UPS some shortcomings in debugging information, logging and documentation, but a Super Smart architecture with lots of potential. Bring to productisation the next generation has a lot of planning and a holistic approach to give us a rock-solid base to go with the specification forward. The sharp-eyed among you will have begun to notice the issue of the formation of a pretty smart team via Citrix: Now

  • The Citrix XenDesktop handbook has its own, updated printing chapter (see here would like to see), regular updates are now planned, so, if you please outside below me address specific architectures or questions!
  • Better user to expect information on the levels of compression and data planes can be found here
  • a new scalability to do guide, as a reference for new implementations in the works is
  • an aggressive series of software enhancements addressing scalability, corner cases and configuration niggles
  • Increased information of specialized support for SMEs, such as Marek Dresler blogs

I have no specific information about new features and time may be, but I can call the move a couple of projects ...

  • an extended test Citrix Ready printer manufacturer certification program developed and enhanced drivers test tools in collaboration with Citrix Ready printer Manufacturer partner manufacturer ~~ POS = TRUNC
  • defensive again architecture to protect the user from problems due to leaky third-party drivers
  • support causes for new server operating systems
  • new features

work we do with the pressure ISVs and support in the use of third-printing Solutions?

Although we put a lot of resources in our own printing solutions, we are planning our specialists third-party solutions also continue to work. We have a number of partners such as printing Cortado ThinPrint, UniPrint triCerat ScrewDrivers and solutions. These solutions can in the most demanding justice printing needs and we with them, who love the options they offer many existing customers. As such, we are determined to ensure support providers and work with them seamless interoperability. Anyness and supporting customer choice vendor lock-in by working with third-party is a core Citrix avoid value I have blogged about previously. We will continue to work with third-party and promote their wide solutions, in fact, we are a Webinar on Secure Mobile Printing Solutions UniPrint to 29 presented th in October 2014 details here.

Final Thoughts

some people were confused really about my fascination and enthusiasm for printing and features such as stapling. HDX GPU-accelerated graphics are Flash, Poster-Boy features that will delight users. Why, when I work with one of the formula, sexiest range of XenDesktop (HDX 3D Pro) already I'm obsessed with "dull" old print, but no one is interested in printing !!! No, not if your graphics are a bit fuzzy because your network has problems, you are likely to live, if pressure goes your entire organization and purchasing system, it can not! I love products to worry the people who make the company function!

Technically, although cloud and VDI printing all the elements that I love and the great of the HDX-team experience in negative networking, use ICA protocols, image manipulation and compression. Documents consist of images and text, and sends it from a distance to be printed there as many elements of the same compression and network considerations that we apply to Citrix Receiver and our mobile graphics technologies. We carry in mobile and remote graphics and are the perfect team to do so in the mobile printing! The integration of these on pressure optimizations with Citrix NetScaler is another fascinating whole system solution.

I have the paperless office found is rare but we also look at exciting technologies, where you will be able to traditional print documents to the readers your phone without the hassle of driver installation ... . so watch this space 😉 I never thought I would be interested in so deep stapling options! Having spent most of the last years trying to live and breathe GPU virtualization projects that I do not think I would be lucky enough to get a further differentiation product so soon!
