More flexibility in the Lync 2013 delivery of XenApp and XenDesktop -

Recognizing that Microsoft Lync is a strategic application for many companies, Citrix has more than anyone else done to the delivery optimize Lync in virtualized environments. We led the way with the introduction of HDX RealTime Optimization Pack for Lync 2010 in June 2012 and embraced Microsoft's VDI plug-in solution for Lync 2013 now as part of XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 Feature Pack 1 release, I am pleased version Lync to give 1.7 of HDX realTime Optimization Pack known.

This is the third release of our Lync pack in six months. Version 1.5 provided support for Lync Server 2013 while delivering on Windows, Mac and Linux devices Lync 2010 client. Version 1.6 added Active Directory Federation to Office 365, and USB phone support. The HDX RealTime Optimization Pack for Lync Version 1.7 brings optimized delivery of Lync 2013 client on Windows and Linux devices, and we will soon provide Mac support in Version 1.8 available.

The HDX RealTime Optimization Pack for Lync provides an optimized architecture, as shown below, the media processing on the user device offloads servers to maximize scalability and eliminate the degradation of audio-video quality.

and although this version is included in XenApp and XenDesktop 7.6 Feature Pack 1, it is also fully compatible with XenApp and XenDesktop 5.x 6.x

When it would be appropriate to use the HDX realTime Optimization Pack for Lync rather than the Microsoft Lync VDI plug-in solution that Citrix also supported? Here are some scenarios that supports only the HDX Lync Pack:

  • non-Windows devices (currently Linux and Mac)
  • Other versions of Windows on the user device, including Windows Thin PC, Windows XPe, Windows Embedded Standard 09, Windows Embedded Standard 7 (WES7) and Windows Server 2012 R2
  • delivery of Lync as a published application (and not as part of a complete virtual desktop)
  • Lync online / Office 365
  • Lync Server 2010 (in addition to Lync Server 2013)
  • relapse on media over ICA, if no media engine is available on the user device

integrate Besides the Lync 2013 client, adds the new version of the Optimization Pack telephony features that appeal to increasing number of customers who use Lync as PBX. These new functions that previously required provide Lync using one of the alternative methods include:

  • Call Forwarding and Simultaneous Ringing controls
  • Dialing on an on-screen keyboard
  • Select the enter phone number
  • call park and call pickup
  • announced transfer (next Unannounced transfer)

Our tests included running the Lync 2013 client on Windows Server 2012. Although the only server release listed as officially supported Windows Server 08 R2, Eason Wang Microsoft TechNet Community support Community pointed out that "it should work fine", and confirmed our test results show that. Reports various other Lync partners on the same TechNet page, and from other sources also confirm that it works.

Lync / Skype product group requirements from Microsoft that customers on Windows Server 2012 formal support of customers Lync 2013 required highlight this requirement to their Microsoft representative. The Microsoft reps have an online system for the requirements of the customer to the product group relaying and this mechanism helps ensure adequate prioritization.
